"People think I'm the greatest damn coach in the world," said the great Bear Bryant, "but Neyland taught me everything I know."

Bryant played in a game against Coach Neyland with a fractured leg...Bama won that game.

My college roommate (my best friend) unfortunately was raised a bammer, he fortunately is one of the few level headed ones that I know personally. He said that Bear Bryant coached several of his family members and that one of his favorite quotes was something like "You will see how you truly measure up the 3rd weekend in October".

I know, we are not playing the 3rd weekend, but most of you know why that was said.

Cite the reference. I've only read this quote on Vol message boards, and it strikes me as highly improbable approaching strange, given that Bryant never coached under Neyland.

The Bear was a great coach but he never beat Neyland. Everybody should read the book"The Junction Boys" to get a glimpse of how tough Bryant was with his team.

The rest of the quote was," "I never beat him," he said, "but I learned a lot from playing him."

in a book called "the last Coach-the life of Paul"Bear"Bryant"...
you can learn and not coach under someone...Bryant
also learned the wishbone under Darrel Royal at TX,he never coached under him... thats why he's one of the best coaches ever...but he learned from the master...

The most admirable thing about The General imo was his service to his country. That said, imagine how many more wins he could have had if not called back into service twice during his time here. More people would know his name as one of the greatest football coaches ever imo. But he was more than a coach, he was a hero.
