There's at least a 50-50 chance Rutgers will fire Fred Hill in the next 10 days.

Wonder who on earth would want that job?
With a good coach, Rutgers should be a top 30 or so job. All you have to do is a halfway decent job of recruiting St. Anthony's, St. Patrick's, St. Benedict's, and the NYC PSL and you'll have the talent to finish in the top half of the Big East. This is Steve Lavin's worst nightmare. He thought he was going to get a head start while Hill coached out next year as a lame duck. Now, there's a chance he doesn't even get an early signing period to himself.

You got any ideas on who Rutgers may look at?

Mike Rice would get a look. I can't help but think that Fran Fraschilla's abruptly pulling out of the Iona search is somehow related to news that Hill is on thin ice. My guess is that they would also do what they've done the last three times they've changed coaches: Try to talk Bob Hurley into leaving St. Anthony's and trying the college game. They'll at least try to talk Lawrence Frank into rethinking his "NBA only" stance. PJ Carlesimo will have some support among their alums and donors.

If they could get Carlesimo or Frank, they would have obviously come out much, much better than the other Big East schools that changed coaches. They could be legitimate contenders with either one of those guys.

Do you think St. John's looked at either of them? They would have been crazy to take Lavin if they had a chance at Frank or Carlesimo.

I know Frank a little bit from his time at UT and if he says he only intends to coach in the NBA, I'll believe him until I hear otherwise.

PJ had a pretty contentious relationship with the St. John's fans when he was at Seton Hall. I think that'd be a tough sell on both ends.

I mock hat sometimes but he shows when he talks about stuff like this how much he knows about the coaching scene and hs recruiting etc

Bruce Pearl is making inroads in NYC and hopefully the NYC area big east schools keep sucking

I see. Surely they could have done better than Lavin though.

The only way they could have done worse, in my opinion, would have been to bring back Brian Mahoney or Mike Jarvis.

I would put the odds higher than that, hat. They get out of this deal easy if they can fire him with cause.

True. The only reason they didn't fire him at the end of the season was they didn't want to shell out almost 1.7 mil. His little outburst at the baseball game, coupled with him openly defying his AD and showing up at the ballpark the next day, may end up being almost 2 million dollars worth of stupid.

Who knows how he would do in college but I'm a big Bob Hurley fan... I'm pissed I just remembered their was a documentary on PBS about St. Anthony's I missed.

It's excellent. I believe ESPN is going to be showing it later in the year.

If what I've been told is correct, Rutgers has a 75% chance of getting things right. Mike Rice, Fran Fraschilla, or Fran Dunphy would be top notch hires. Al Skinner, on the other hand, would be one of the worst hires of the offseason.

Rice is really good. Should have been hired by St. John's or DePaul.

He's certaily better than the guys hired at those places.Purnell has already managed to piss off all the Public League coaches in Chicago. That's just brilliant.

I will give Lavin credit for doing his homework. Word is that he's going to hire Mo Hicks as his basketball operations guy. That would be a very shrewd move.

Why was he their final choice anyway? Did others turn it down or what?

No reason a program nestled in the heart of NY freakin City should be relegated to the bottom-half of the BE every year.

BTW, could you lend some info as to who Mo Hicks is? Don't recognize the name.
Hicks is the head coach at Rice high school and runs the Gaucho AAU program.

They got turned down by several coaches, then decided not to wait for Dayton's season to end in order to speak with Brian Gregory. That's how you get stuck with Oliver Purnell.
