My wife and I attended the Big Orange Caravan at Nissan Stadium last night and had a great time. I didn't know whether to post this on the basketball or football board, so I'l just post on both. Some highlights:

-Rick Barnes was late. I asked Steve Hamer if he knew where Barnes was and Steve told me Coach was stuck in traffic. He had not come to Nashville with Heupel and Harper because he'd been out recruiting. They had to send an escort out to get him. Just as Barnes arrived, Steve told me that Chris Ledlum had just committed. After Barnes did his radio spot with 104.5, he signed autographs and we were one of the first to greet him. He said he'd "been up in Boston recruiting." My wife asked him if it was cold up there. He said it was cold and the wind was awful. But obviously, it was a successful trip.

-I had Josh Heupel sign a Tennessee mini helmet for me. I joked with him that "my wife told me to ask you to sign an Oklahoma helmet, but I told her you'd refuse." He said (with a tone of adamance), "That's right. It's all orange over here now." The man behind me had an Oklahoma card that he had Heupel sign. But there was a photographer taking shots of everything and CJH told the photographer, "No photos of me signing that OU card." The photographer said, "yes sir." It was pretty clear to me that there is no love lost between Heupel and OU now and he's now a Tennessee man through and through.

-Kellie Harper was very kind and engaging. My wife spent some time talking about basketball with her (my wife coaches middle school girls) and the fact that our daughter is a student manager for the Cincinnati women's team who would love to work for the Lady Vols one day. Kellie asked her name, asked questions about her, and was very genuine. I really hope she succeeds at Tennessee, because I think she's all class.

-When the coaches got on stage to talk (roundtable discussion style with Kesling as the host), it was the Rick Barnes Comedy Hour, but the other two showed some wit too. At one point, Barnes made fun of Heupel's signature and said, "when did you start practicing signing your name...the 7th or 8th grade?" Heupel said, "well unlike you, I was signing autographs during my playing days." Kellie lost it. At another point, they were talking about their worst run-ins with officials during games. Barnes talked about some instances, Harper talked about some instances, then Barnes said, "Josh always gets away with it, though." Heupel said, "Didn't get away with it in the Orange Bowl." I wish someone had asked what he said.

It was a great event. Loved meeting and engaging with our coaches. We have as healthy an athletics department as any school in America. I had hoped to meet Danny White and thank him for that, but he was in Cincinnati for obvious reasons.

I also attended as I do every year and it’s so worth it just to hear these three talk on a more personal level and understand they are just fun loving people with stressful jobs.

Feel free to share any of the other funny comments Barnes shot off. I couldn't remember all of them. He was poking Kesling a lot (to his credit, Bob was laughing and jabbing back some). At one point, someone asked him what the most difficult part of his job was and Barnes said, "working with a minor league announcer."

That last part wasn't really a joke though

Enjoyed your post. That sounds like it was a fun event. This is the best I’ve felt about UT athletics in a long time. Three top notch coaches at the event that seem to really love it here. Steve Hamer seems like a great guy too. I always enjoy when he fills in calling the basketball games.

Ain’t that the truth. We’ve settled for very poor quality in that dept since Ward retired. Sad.
It's really unfair to expect him, or anyone for that matter, to be anywhere close to as good as the GOAT, but I do think we could have found a more suitable replacement by now.

Steve and I worked together many moons ago at SunTrust Bank in Farragut. I hadn't seen him in years, but it was great to catch up with him. He told me lunch is on him next time I'm in Knoxville, so I plan not to let as much time pass between seeing him. Yes, he's a great guy who deserves every good thing that comes his way.

I’ve heard High school announcers that are better. UT just doesn’t care. They are comfortable with him.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve been to a couple, the last being with Butch as coach. He took off rt after the event but Scott and Shoop (sp) stayed to talk. Shoop (sp) was impressive and spent time talking to my then 12-13 yr old. I didn’t realize my son shouldn’t have attended the event as it could have been a NC2A violation since he played school sports.

Anyway, Shoop was cool about everything, made eye contact, and asked my son questions. Someone from UT tried to grab Shoop for a TV interview but Shoop politely advised to wait until he was done with his conversation w my son. His wife also asked questions and showed a genuine interest. Scott was a nice guy but was busy scarfing down food. 😆

I always respected that and to this day it means a lot though my son is a 20 yr old UT soph.

@Amsler, are you still in banking?

I'm not. I went to law school in my early 30s. I'm glad I did so later in life because, unlike most of my younger classmates, I had spent enough time in the corporate world to know that I didn't want to practice "big firm law," no matter how enticing the starting salary might be. I work for myself, I am fortunate to have plenty of business, but I also have time to enjoy life (and waste time on Volnation ;)). That's not to say I don't experience some stress with my job (who doesn't?), but it's nothing like the stress many of my colleagues endure.

Anyway, I learned a lot in banking and made some great connections. That experience has helped me in my law practice.

I ask since I have been in banking since 2003. I’ve been in consumer my entire career as I prefer all jacks of trade in retail instead of commercial, mortgage, or private wealth.

However, managing people is more stressful nowadays as well as hiring. People think bankers work 40 hours but that’s wishful thinking in Mgmt. There is so much involved as compliance and operations make the job more difficult.
