In The Stillness - Baseball Prospectus

A good essay on the topic. Nothing overly groundbreaking.*

If there is a sin that baseball has committed over and over and over in the last 20 years, it’s been judging everything—and I mean everything—by efficiency. Strategies have become much more homogenous because we’ve found the inefficiencies and changed them. And we congratulated ourselves for hacking the game and figuring out how to play it better.

But there’s more to a baseball game than the baseball that’s played. The best analog I can come up with is that in the late innings of a close game, those long pauses and step offs are a way of building the tension in the game. A few years ago, when MLB decided to do away with the four sham pitches for an intentional walk, I wrote that where baseball saw wasted time, I saw an establishing shot during a tense scene in a film. Not necessary to move the plot along, but part of the visual vocabulary of storytelling in our culture.

So everyone but the person with the power to change it knew Grissom wasn't a good idea, but he decides not to do anything about it. Genius level stuff.
Not fair to the kid, either. Everyone on earth knows he is not a SS, including him and he is going to get exposed again and again. Hopefully the field discouragement doesn’t affect his performance at the plate.

Darnell Wright projected to go to Buffalo with the 31st pick and Jalin Hyatt goes to Cleveland at number 42 in Yahoo's mock draft which is 5.0.
