not looking great for Matthews, it appears.

AP has insinuated he got tied in all the social media misinformation. If that’s the reason, he was always going to find a reason to leave. 🤷🏻‍♂️

NIL and the transfer portal has made not really care if any player leaves. Great talent or not. I'll cheer for the ones on the roster game 1 next year

I miss the days when the players loved playing for UT. Those days have been gone probably longer than I realize.

Playing for the love of the game has, by and large, has been gone since being a good college player meant that you had a chance of making a bunch of money playing professional football. That's been the case since probably the 1950s. Before then, being a good professional player meant that you made something like a doctor or lawyer's salary, or maybe even less. Playing football was something to do while in college, and you were probably going to get a "real job" after.

Once cable TV money began to pour into the sport in the early 80s, all bets were off. There are of course exceptions, but these guys are playing the sport as a business decision and are going want to play at the place that gives them the best chance professionally.

I’m sure they still love playing for UT, but it’s gotta make sense for them financially. I love what I do but I wouldn’t do it I couldn’t make money doing it.

I work with three former Vandy football players. One was a highly touted recruit that could have gone anywhere in the country and he JUST missed the NIL window. He would have gotten $700,000+ out of high school. That would have been a life changing head start for a guy that never had a chance at the NFL.

My thoughts as well

I've always thought that NIL impacts the calculus of a decent or lower-level recruit than a 5-star.

The 5-star with bonafide NFL aspirations is going to get a lot (and probably comparable) offers from a variety of schools, giving them more options. They have more leeway to prioritize a coach or program where they actually want to play, while at the same time getting NIL money. If the money is similar at a bunch of different places, then pick the place you actually want to play independent of money.

A lower level recruit who doesn't think they can pro or even want to go pro is probably more likely to just jump at the best NIL offer, regardless of where it is, and they likely have far fewer options. In other words the "guys in it only for the money" I think are actually more likely to be your non-superstar players.
