Hindsight is 20/20, but to this day I am not sure why I and a ton of other fans didn't see Lane to USC as a strong possibility once Carroll took the Seahawks job. I remember seeing his name being thrown around in a couple of places, but almost nobody thought he'd leave after just a year. What a huge miscalculation. I remember coming home from a night class one night, opening up Yahoo Sports, and seeing it on the homepage and being floored.
I get the idea behind less plays = player safety. But the NFL and NCAAF clock rules suck.
I think a lot of it was Kiffin being something of an unknown commodity personality and disposition-wise at the time too. Everybody knew he was kind of a brash and cocky guy, but he didn't have anywhere near the persona that he does now.Coaches leaving after one year for another P5 was just completely uncommon. I remember reading among P5 times it had only happened twice in the previous 30 years or something at the time (Tuberville being one of them).

Also, what coaches have left a P5 job after one year for another other than Kiffin? Tuberville didn't. Coach Fran pulled a fast one on Alabama, but at least he stayed 2 seasons.
Eh, I think the reason would have been probably exactly the same unless he was the Peyton Manning of USC or something like that. Nobody wants to admit it now, but the reason the reaction was so explosive was because everyone loved him. We loved the ****-talking, and the team actually showed some promise on the field as the season went along. You don't get that mad when someone who you think is Jeremy Pruitt or Dooley leaves.Man why did I think Tuberville did? Great mistake on my part.
I need to see if I can find the article. I think the other thing is that while it was Lane’s “dream school” it also wasn’t his alma mater. Had Lane actually played at USC, I think there would have been a different tone to leaving.
