Bush names Pentagon General 'war czar'

Let's see this guys duties will be to coordinate the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies during a time of war. Sounds like the Commander in Chief's job to me. Daddy couldn't help so he hired a fall guy to do the job for him. Incredible.

Thoughts? :eek:k:

What is the GOP's (or the Bush family's) fascination with the word czar? William Bennett was a drug czar and now we have a war czar?

I always thought that the commander-in-chief was the war czar?

Daddy tried to help but W was too ignorant to take it.

It is actually a good move. Maybe the light is finally going off in W's head and he realizes he no longer has any credibility. I agree it is supposed to the the commander-in-chief's job, but we all know, both republicans and democrats, Bush has never been much of a commander-in-chief, or too much of one when he shouldn't have been. Bush knows he has no credibility so basically this puts a whole new face on who speaks on this policy. Any word that comes out of Bush's mouth gets shot up. This guy is new blood and willat least at the start get a new reception...we'll see for how long.

supposedly, alot of proven battlefield commanders (McCaffery, Schwarzkopf, et al) turned down the spot. I think it is stupid..the military needs less meddling from the government, not someone to coordinate all the meddling.

I am a conservative by nature, though i am a Libertarian when the bottom line is drawn. I do believe that militant Islam is a threat to our nation, and one we must fight anytime, anyplace we can get a punch in. That is the job of our military.

However, the current administration seems more and more to be conducting affairs like Jefferson Davis did...looking at the map, and deciding from far away (relatively, considering Davis' time) that they had superior knowledge of the way in which to carry out a war than did the commanders in the field.

For an off the cuff example, General CSpindizzy calls me, the president, saying in order to hold his line he needs 3 divisions and a full brigade of artillery. He is on the ground, mind you. Me, having limited military knowledge, but being pretty good playing Axis and Allies with my buddies over a case of beer, call back and say "from my experience, you should be able to make do with 3 divisions and 3 BATTERIES of artillery. It's garbage.

As MG1968 stated, the PCness is making alot of calls. Thing is, we are in a tough spot, as the Generals who led combat platoons and companies in Vietnam are mostly gone, and the generation of peacetime generals are in power, guys that have never recieved an incoming mortar round, had their RTO gunned down next to them. Nowadays, our Captains and Lieutenants know the importance of taking the fight to the enemy, whereas the high command is clueless.

I agree on the decisions in the field but keep in mind the military focuses on the military task at hand. It is the civilians - diplomats - who have to also address the other issues relevant to the issue as well. In the case of Iraq, we chose not to go in and disarm everyone from the beginning. Then we rushed a government into existence without making sure the country was properly propped up and now you have a government literally under fire by every fringe group armed to the teeth.

The issue comes down to how to make the best of a crappy situation. Basically we've botched every step in this process and it has only snowballed. It has become similar to Vietnam where we have lost control and even the government we've installed cannot gain control. If this surge does not work, we have failed. I do not buy into the "we will succeed but it will take years" argument. Just look at how sending more troops has not helped. We gain in one area and lose in another so we shift only to lose where we just gained.

I see this fall as the final countdown. I just hate that we and our mission is now in the hands of a government that even thought up the idea to take a vacation while their nation burns. Nero running it?
