Good stuff by Nick.

Tennessee tried to implement pack line defense principles in the Bahamas and it worked. They overplayed driving lanes Saturday.

Also, they are funneling way too much to the paint. Easy drives+Easy kick outs=Easy 3's

It was a good write up, but he didn't pick the best examples to off jmo. Like how he used Stokes positioning as an example when Richardson had already made the shot. Who is Nick Carner?

He's the guy who wrote the article. :)

A new feature from Nick Carner. Feedback welcome.

Good read Freak thanks.

I would like to see our defensive stats by half. Cause I swear if we "got up in'em" from the tip we may still have 2 losses but they would have been against Iowa and Kansas.(if we had them) Much better losses, if you have to have them.

Conclusion: UT needs to come out playing like their down 10, and it is the second half!!

Agree, Tennessee can't play the same type of first half against Wichita St. and expect to still be in the game, IMO.

What happened to that one guy that was writing blogs for VN as well on recruiting? He said he used to work for Rivals or something. I haven't seen him around here for awhile.

We've had a hard time hooking up, which Is my fault mostly.

Thanks, Zack. Or Zach?

Also, why funnel drives into the paint without a shot-blocking presence down low?

I'm Nick Carner. Who is iKrager? :)

I see your point and considered it before using that selection. But what does the shot going in actually have to do with Stokes' position?

He should be expecting every shot to NOT go in and position himself accordingly.

Seriously, thanks for reading. I'm more educated on football so you regulars will have to be gentle on me 'till I get in the swing of things...

Edit: Just a little about me... As calban said, I'm a journalism grad from UT. I just finished up in May, actually.

In all honestly, I'm no different than y'all -- I don't get paid for this or anything. In fact, most of the cats in this forum likely know more than I do. So, when I use the word 'exacerbated' instead of one that makes sense, like 'exaggerated,' please feel free to let a brother know. Hopefully we'll have some nice and civil basketball discussions. I'm looking forward to it.

I think the start will be key on Saturday. If we come out sluggish on the road against a quality opponent, we may not be able to claw back in it.

Zack. Thanks for asking!

I honestly am not sure unless Cuonzo feels that UT's perimeter length can cover outside shooters. Which they can't when they funnel.

I think a pack line defensive approach should be the adopted for the year and no more funneling. Play it straight up.

For pro ball, I'm an Orlando Magic fan so I've seen my share of drives funneled down low, and when you have Dwight Howard down there to swat balls into the stands, it works. With Maymon and Stokes, I don't really see it working.

When you say pack line... Is that like what Pearl used to do to shut down driving lanes for opposing offenses? The help sags down to cut off the drive?

Edit: A link for those interested in the Pack Line defense.

Pearl was more of an intense on ball pressure guy to play aggressive passing lanes to force turnovers. CCM doesn't play a D that forces turnovers. As in the link, Tony Bennett had really helped make the pack line D famous.
