Tulane needs to win tonight and the AAC championship plus have someone other than Boise State win the Mountain West. They would be the highest ranked Group of 5 champion.

What does Tulane need to happen to make the playoffs?

Boise State (ranked CFP #11 at present) not winning the Mountain West championship (the expected auto bid as the fourth-ranked conference champion) would give Tulane a crack at the playoffs.

The fifth-highest-ranked conference champion will also be seeded as an automatic qualifier. Presently that is CFP #16 Arizona State (Big 12), who would receive the 12 seed.

Tulane (CFP #17) is only one place back of Arizona State. So if Arizona State were to lose to 4-7 Arizona this weekend or lose the Big 12 championship game (I think their opponent is still up in the air); and (3) Tulane were to win tonight and also winning the AAC championship game against Army, then Tulane might jump Arizona State in the CFP rankings and get the 12 seed.

So root against Boise State and especially against Arizona State.

Whoever gets that 12th seed, as things stand now, would play at Ohio State.
