Mathew’s is in the portal currently. The rules state that he can still come back, but I can’t imagine why he would. What ever motivated him to enter in the first place has not changed.

Most likely he wants to see who and how many WRs we are bringing in and how much we will pay them. The WR room is getting an overhaul like DBs last year. The portal deadline means you have to enter to keep your options open. Entering doesn’t mean you have to transfer.

Why not? Football season ends around Mid January, Baseball season doesn't start till mid February.

Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson done both at FSU and Auburn respectfully, believe Kenny Lofton played both as well at Arizona.

Jefferson would just miss the 2 Fall Baseball games and with Jefferson being a positional player shouldn't be an issue.

@Volprofch05 I think it’s safe to say coaching cost you a chance to win that game. You have a rookie QB on the road with a running clock after a 1st down and 34 seconds left but choose not to call a timeout whenever you have 2 of them. Instead, the next play ends with an incomplete pass and 17 valuable seconds run off the clock. So you are stuck attempting a 56 yard field goal with a kicker that’s only been there 2 weeks with a career long of 53 yards, whenever you could have gotten an attempt inside of 50 yards. Morris did not put his rookie into a position to succeed on that last drive and that loss is 100% on him.

Meanwhile, the guy on the other sideline that got your organization to a Super Bowl has his team solidly in the playoffs and will have an advantageous path to advancing to the divisional round with a win next week.

Yep, that was super boneheaded coaching and typical fail-cons. Hopefully, at least there are signs that Penix could be a real QB, for once.

We’ll see about Quinn, he did well with the falcons at first, so I’ll see how he ages first.

I saw a YouTube video from one of the talking heads. It appears that 24/7 shows that Matthews is in the portal. He is not. All the other sites do not have him in yet. The University was not open during the holidays thus the paperwork has not been submitted as of last night, 1/2/2025.

They do expect him to enter the portal, however. If he does it will be today, 1/3/2025. As you stated he can remove his name from the portal if he changes his mind, as long as the Tennessee has room for his return.

My gut tells me that he requested papers to have a safety net due to Nico rumors, Pope rumors, etc. I cannot fault him for doing that. Once he did that, the vultures most likely started circling with $$$.
The talking heads have said all along that the coaching staff has been working to keep him by answering questions of his concerns, etc. The staff is actively trying to reel in some players to shore up the low numbers.
As they say, this is the wild wild west of college football today. I have written this one off as he is leaving personally. I'm becoming numb to all of this.

I don’t have an issue with the portal. I have an issue with tampering and back channel offers while a player is still on the roster.

IMO the only good ones that transferred out were due to the Bubba Gump McDonald’s Bag Boyz. Ever since Heupel has been here they’ve done a good job of retaining talent.
