The reason Smoltz didn't win CY Young as a closer in 2002 was

Randy Johnson 24-5 record with over 300 strikeouts and led league in ERA.

I would have given it to Jason Schmidt. Dodgers finished 16 games behind the Giants. Nobody should be winning the Cy Young or MVP whenever their team can’t even make the playoffs. If you are that great then you should be leading your team to the postseason.

I look at individual baseball awards a little differently.
I apply the Dale Murphy rule and can overlook the fact that a great player is playing on a team.
