The Dugout - General Topics, Chat, Random Photos and Memes.......No Politics

I’d be curious to see how all of these feel good stories about how nice all the players are would’ve been handled if we were in the CWS. To be clear, I’m not saying our guys don’t deserve those stories, but yet I wonder…

I’m ready for robo umps calling balls and strikes. If you have MLB umpires this bad, there’s a problem…

I'm old school, but the ump is just part of the game. Doug's feet hurt and he just wanted to go home. Therefore, everything close was a strike for both teams. Good pitchers and hitters adjust for that and move on with the show. It is entertainment.

That is what made the Drew Gilbert thing so sad. Yes, the pitch was a ball and the umpire missed the call. Move on. If Drew makes an error, the umpire doesn't run out there and curse him out. He'll learn in the rookie league at Las Cruces.

This guy literally took a win away from the Blue Jays. At some point you have to care about the integrity of the game. I’m not even a Blue Jays fan and it’s disappointing to me. Part of the problem is the rotation of umpires. They don’t ask every player to play every position, so why make an umpire call balls and strikes if they suck at it? Take the best home plate umpires and make that their permanent position. There would be a lot less complaining going on if they had a consistent strike zone for a series rather than guessing what’s a strike/ball on a day-to-day basis.

They grade them really closely as the umpire works his way up thru rookie ball to the 4-5 levels of minor league. It takes big time skill for an ump to make the majors.

However, they do have an union and age and work can become shoddy.

Hard to tell from that chart, but looks like he basically just had a really wide strike zone and was giving a few low ones.

Sorry to the Blue Jays...but it evens out over the 162 games.

Just a month ago, Doug had a game in which he missed 1 call out of 143 pitches in a 9 inning game. Yesterday he missed 26 calls out of 228 pitches in a 12 inning game. If you are that inconsistent then you shouldn’t be behind the plate.

I'm a National League guy so not familiar with him. But, he appears to be well known for having a wide strike zone some nights. Honestly....I doubt that Doug cared whether the Blue Jays or White Sox won the game. He had a bad game. Sometimes, Dansby Swanson makes two errors and strikes out four times.

Cowboy Joe West was a famous one from my days of paying closer attention. He was just going to make some wrong decisions.

Again, it is a union thing. I'm ok with it.

Tennis has a robo-line judge thing. It is ok...you get a certain number of challenges. But, it shows things down.
