I didn't realize this...

From GVX:

First Time At 13: Pearl would appreciate a knock on wood from the UT fan base as for the first time in Knoxville he'll have a full compliment of 13 scholarship players. The difference between 12 and 13 players could easily mean the difference between having quality depth and having intense competition for playing time.

"This is the deepest roster we've had,'' Pearl said. "I've told them, I don't want to hear about all the hard work they've done this summer, it's all about them showing me.'

Do you really think one additional scholarship player really makes that much difference?

I really don't see 1 more scholly making that huge of a difference....though I guess it could depending on the player

Here is the way I look at it. That is another fresh body that can come off the bench, that can give you 5 fouls, some quality minutes for the team. I would say one player can make a huge difference.

No, it's impossible to play 13 guys. The only thing it does is give Pearl another possible option in creating his 9 or 10 man rotation. I don't really think it's significant at all.

I think this is big. Really important if injuries mount, but also helps prevent injuries as more guys should enter the rotation and keep people fresh.

Your both right. A 9 or 10 man rotation is traditional, but it is nice having a full roster of 13 scholly players! The younger guys probably won't play much their early years, they will develop over time behind the other talented players...

I've heard coaches use it as an excuse when they are down, but I've never heard a coach cite having 13 scholarships as a positive for the upcoming season.

O.k. how many tires would you rather have on your car?
I'd rather have four, with a spare.
Coach P you're the best at getting the most out of your players.
GO VOLS!

The idea is that our worst players this season are Summitt, Hubert, and McBee. As opposed to Cannington, Jackson, Wild, Mulholland, etc. of years past. To some, this may be cutting string down the middle, but I think our bottom players this year are much better than they have been.

the question is who is out of the rotation in big games. by my assement we have 11 or 12 guys who are capable of playing in every game. i guess the old redshirt will be thrown on someone, but who ? this is a great problem to have though. i think at least elite eight for us !!! :lolabove: :good!::salute:

The real difference is, Pearl ,with that one more scholly player, gives him more flexibility at the five and four, than he's ever had. More fouls to give inside, where the most fouls occur. :eek:k:

Hubert and Summitt are 14 and 15. Cannington was 16.

I would rather have four with a spare. Having two spares would be even better, but the chances of needing both at the same time would be pretty rare.

The more players the better. I'd certainly rather have 13 than 12. I just don't think it makes a significant difference over the course of a season. Most of the time, that 13th guy isn't going to see the floor anyway.

It is very significant for practice when you have another scholarship player instead of walk-ons. It is also significant this year as it allowed us to pick up an additional post player that will likely be part of the rotation.

It's not significant in practice. They could already scrimmage 5 on 5 with 2 subs before we went to 13. It makes absolutely 0 difference in practice.

Acting as if giving 2 walk-ons scholarships and getting Fields completely changes the dynamics of practice is ludicrous.

Not looking good for Swiperboy's minutes. This guy needed to pack on 20 pds over the summer, and increase his vert, and from what I've heard it didn't happen.

I wonder how many minutes the transfers will get. i see the Wilmington transfer spelling Williams at the 5. Harris will likely get the most of the minutes at the 4, and Hall will be his sub. Maymon is a mystery as he left Marquette because he doesn't want to play the post. Can he play the three?

Bone is backing up Goins at the point, so I don't see Golden playing much this year. McRae is another I don't see cracking the rotation much. Cam has been good, and I see his best ball ahead of him. Hope he had a great off-season, or his minutes will be up for grabs.

Heaven help us is Steven Pearl even sees a minute of PT. Nepotism sucks.

I would bet that Golden is backing up Goins, and Bone is probably backing up both the 2 and the 3.

There is no question that Fields will help in practice and will help our other posts improve simply due to his physicality. As for the two walk-on scholarships, I agree completely.

do you guys remember when those guys on our team got arrested on new years day and a couple of them got suspended and one more (our star player) got kicked off the team? yeah well having an extra scholarship is a pretty good thing for me to hear. Thats one less walk on player that we have to expect to overachieve if something awful like that happens again (and apparently we cant go very long without any kind of run in with the law), or if we have key injuries. I think we of all fans should appreciate this. Im not saying it didnt work out last year, but i am willing to bet if we ended up in that situation again it would probably not work out so well for us.

I'd say the real difference is the ability to grab one extra player in a monster class.

Golden is backing up Goins, he may average double-figure minutes. Likewise, McRae is 2nd in rotation behind Scotty, so he'll be playing plenty while Scotty takes breathers.
