Where is our boy Scotty Hopson these days? I remember listening to him tell the Sports Animal that he was a one and done kinda guy before he came to TN...It's very sad that he ended up 3 and done...DONE! I really wish he hadn't been a bust. So sad!

I wouldn't say he was a bust. The guy got better each year and led us in scoring two years in a row. He just went pro a year too soon and that's ok. The kid is very athletic and has potential. I'm not counting him out. I'm just wondering why so many UT fans dislike the guy. He never said anything negative, never talked bad about UT, and never got in trouble. I think he's a nice kid and I wish him the best of luck.

I pretty much agree. He didn't suck, he contributed, and he improved. Good guy too. He only led in scoring for one season though.

This is the correct answer. His shooting got quite a bit better once he moved away from the high arching long hang time jump shot of his freshman year. Everyone wants to be an NBA player and thinks they are better than they really are. He just got very bad advice IMO.

Good luck to him in Chernoble or wherever he is playing.

I can't speak for others, but my guess as to why people are negative about Scotty is had he played
better and not been lazy at times, we could have won
some of the games that we ended up losing by 5 or 6 points. His effort could have secured several wins for us. Wins that were decided by 5 or 6 points.
I could very well be wrong but that is a guess!!!

Your reason for editing that post was "spelling"?

Chernobyl begs to differ. :)

You're right he led in scoring last year and the year before Chism got him by a fraction. So I'll rephrase and say he was a top two scorer for us two years in a row. If I remember correctly lol.

To me, a bust is someone who never consistently lives up to the hype. The guy was thought of as a gamechanger/one and done player. He ended up being a player that could be counted on for about 5 games then he went off to Scotty's World. He is a Bust! I agree that he had amazing talent, and he won some games for us. However, he never lived up to the hype. Therefore, He is a bust!

This is off the subject, but.... Am I the only one who has noticed that during the off season, when Classic games are shown, U.T. is always shown in games that we lose.
The three S.E.C. Championship games. A close game against Florida. A close game against Alabama. A close game against L.S.U.
Why have I not seen the 2005 game against L.S.U., in which we came from behind and won? Why haven't I seen a game against Georgia in which we won? Why haven't I seen the USC game, on Halloween, in which we wore the black uniforms and won?
Why are we always portrayed in a negative light???? Just saying......

i agree with snapcracklepop. hopson was a bust. i played 2 yrs at franklin junior high under coach fred lane. anybody knows that the guy was a 5 star bust out of school and u could tell from the start he never should have been rated as a 5 star.

4 points against Michigan on 1-5 shooting. Absolutely pathetic for our "star player".

Probably the most inconsistent player in UT basketball history. When he was on, he was a pleasure to watch.

That's some strange logic since the player in question in almost every single case has no control over the "hype". It is generated by unrealistic fans and scouting services trying to generate dollars from those very fans.

OK...In THIS case....Hopson said on Knoxville radio that he was a ONE AND DONE kinda guy. Sounds to me like a little bit of self-generated hype as well. So I guess you are happy with guys that come in as BIG TIME players but never pan out? Hopson never fully dedicated himself to being a Volunteer BBall player. Or maybe he just had a lot of personal issues going on. I hate it for the guy, but he was a Bust! I really wanted him to do well...but O WELL.

I agree that he never materialized according to what most thought he would accomplish. He was very immature and mentally weak. He was a product of hype that was created by other people and apparently duped by that hype as anyone else. No one goes on the radio at 17-18 years old and proclaims their greatness without everyone around them feeding them that kind of crap. He listened to people from a very early age tell him how great he was and that he was a sure thing and bought into himself. He is no different than you, I, or anyone else who listened to those who said how great he was.

Bottom line, he didn't create the hype machine around him. That was created long before he stepped foot on campus. Did he contribute to it with that interview (which I question the overall accuracy of, as I have never heard it)? Sure, but he was a victim of it as much as the fans were.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!! Scotty Hopson was easily the most DOMINATE player of our time. We all were extremely fortunate that we were allowed to be blessed by his GREATNESS for the three years he allowed us to gaze upon him with amazement. I myself will be praying for a direct stream so I can watch the biggest thing to hit Russia since Ivan Drago. Go Scotty!!!! :salute:

I don't think he was a complete bust but never really lived up to the MAA Hype. The kid was extremely cocky coming into Knoxville and he learned the hard way that just because your a McDonalds All American it doesn't translate to big dollars in the NBA. The great thing about Scotty is no body denies he has the potential to play in the NBA and it's really up to him if he gets there but for his sake, I sure hope he took a few foreign classes on UTs dime. :p
