Want to take a stab at unlocking that sequence?

Those are the Rivals.com rankings of top wide receivers in the nation before final revisions.

2--Randall Carroll
4--Patrick Patterson
5--Alshon Jeffrey
8--Marlon Brown
13--Je'Ron Stokes (soft-verbal)
18--Kendall Kelly
20--Chad Bumphis
32--James Green (committed)
52--Zach Rogers (committed)

We are in the top-3 for five of the top thirteen wide receivers in the nation.

Doesn't it feel good to say that? If we are able to lock up two of those seven players, it could be huge for getting a 5-star quarterback in 2010.

Carroll and Jeffrey are both considered soft verbals looking to play outside of the Coliseum.

So my question: is TN addressing the QB thing in a backwards fashion---reel in a 5-star QB with a top-notch receiving corps?

Who wouldn't want to come to a school with those targets to throw to? (not to mention the supporting cast of TE's/RB's/FB's)

So how much of a factor is getting top talent at WR going to be in the QB recruiting wars of 2010? Or will the receiving corps ultimately be overshadowed by other factors?

I really hope that we get a couple top shelf recievers but i think our recruiting focus needs to be on the lines of scrimmage. jones moore and paige would be competent enough with an average qb. so any guys that we bring in this year is really just a bonus. from what i hear, we are really in it for this heaps kid i think from out in utah or something next year.

I don't know that CLK is intentionally doing the WRs first then QB...or did he get in the recruiting game so late, this is just how it is going to work out

One way or another, I'm just really excited to see so many wideouts that have us in their top 3!!! That can pretty much be attributed to CLK being hired. These kids know what he likes to do with a great receiving corps. I'm extremely excited about the future of TN football!!! I can't remember being this excited about TN football ever... The future is bright gents... The future is bright!

This might be a possibility but I think it is more of an issue that top WRs usually have the most "flashy" personalities and keep their recruiting open until late in the season which allows a newcomer like Kiffin to get in and impress them. Kiffin also has a track record of recruiting top receivers and seems to like having a stable of them. Has there been a WR prospect that Kiffin has gone after who isn't somewhat interested?

If we can keep Stokes and land Marlon Brown, I will be extremely happy...but it is indeed good to have so many of those taking a strong look at us at this point....

Another point to mention will be that our current QB's will improve as well as they will possibly be throwing to these true freshmen next year....Brown and Stokes can only help Stephens or Coleman

Both. We need help at WR. Paige has proved nothin so we need help there with only two somewhat proven players in Jones and Moore. And the best QBs are gone so he'll just go after one next year.

Stokes is coming here. He's just looking around. I don't know if we get Carroll though. I can see us getting Patterson, Brown, and Stokes.

I read an article that said Carroll wasn't intrested in Usc anymore although he remains committed. It's gonna be us or Cal I think. I really believe CLK can sell him on our program when he comes for his official visit Jan.30. Well, at least I hope. This kid is supposed to be the next DeSean Jackson.

Kendall Kelly isn't considering us anymore? And its funny how rivals doesnt even list us in the schools that Carroll is considering. Bumphis already narrowed it down to 2 and were not included.

Is Patterson really interested now or what? I agree with you all. I think our best combo would be Brown, Patterson, Carroll. 2 guys with size and a little speedy WR would be a nasty combo. Kind of like the Price,Copeland,Wilson

I'll try to clarify what I meant. Do you think on day one he thought the following?

"...if I can't get a QB since I'm so late in the game, the next best thing is to load up at WR in order to entice a 5-star guy to sign in the next class."

I'm saying that may be why he's been so confident when asked about the QB issue. He thinks he can do the next best thing---which is go playmaker heavy and lure in his ideal fit.

Kendall Kelly isn't considering us anymore? And its funny how rivals doesnt even list us in the schools that Carroll is considering. Bumphis already narrowed it down to 2 and were not included.

Kelly's stock has been falling since combines & all-star events as you probably know and as a result he's being recruited less heavily by some of our competition. He's been mentioned among other guys we have started targeting since the staff change. I will try to find the article. It was printed this week.

Bumphis and Carroll have official visits with us on 1/30 according to Scout. Rivals has 1/30 open for Kelly so it wouldn't be out of the question for him to visit that last weekend. I'm not holding my breath for Kelly, though.

I think we're frontrunners for Brown. I've been all over Google news, Rivals, and Scout and one article said TN was trying to make Brown feel like the most important recruit in the entire world with the way they've stepped it up. K-town seems to narrowly be ahead of Athens for Brown's next place of residence.

I'll throw out another question---USC likes to go first team versus first team at practice. Do you think Lane's told these kids they could go up against our first team in practice? Do you think the allure of competing against Eric Berry weekly could give them just a little boost?

Is Patterson really interested now or what? I agree with you all. I think our best combo would be Brown, Patterson, Carroll. 2 guys with size and a little speedy WR would be a nasty combo. Kind of like the Price,Copeland,Wilson

Pat Patterson got an in-home visit from Monte & Coach O this week and he's schedule to visit on 1/30.

Patterson had some good quotes in Rivals this week. They visited him on Monday and he said Monte and Orgeron made him feel wanted. He also said we were once his favorite team growing up (not surprisingly when we had Manning).

Patterson and Jeffrey are ranked 1 & 5 respecitively in the top-5 list of "best hands" for wide receivers on Rivals.

We are getting a visit from him tho. We are not out of it yet.

The question is how does our staff rate the WR's on that list as opposed to what the so called experts rate them.

Well judging by their actions---those they've contacted and those scheduled for campus visits, the staff's top-picks seem to mirror popular sentiment. It seems like the "so-called experts" are generally in agreement with UT's new staff and who the top targets at WR should be.

It's not like it will ever become public knowledge on what Lane's exact pecking order is, though.

I like every receiver on the list but Alshon Jeffrey. He seems to be too slow for our type of offense. Really would like any of the other guys. I just don't see him getting open against the Florida DBs. He does have good hands though.

I expect us to get an early commitement from Phillip Simms from VA.

I finally got around to watching his highlight reel on Rivals. Clip #5 looks decent---nice arm strength and some solid deep throws.

Rivals & Scout both show a UT offer, but does anyone know if that is from the old staff or the new one?

He is listed anywhere from 6'0 to 6'2, but I wonder if he could be taller after his senior season.

His stats say 32 TD's & 4 int's for 2008---with no evaluations on strengths/weaknesses, I guess that will have to speak on behalf of his decision-making and his ability to read defenses.

I would have to expect Tennessee to get two QB's in this class with Crompton graduating and perhaps Stephens or Coleman transferring (depending on depth chart placement).

Hypothetically speaking and it's a big if---if Heaps is taking a 2-yr mission after his 19th birthday which will occur before the 2010 fall semester, we could get Heaps and another stud QB in the same class. Heaps would enroll after his mission and take over after his co-classman moved on.

Between Norm Chow at UCLA, WSU's recruiting progress, UW being his childhood favorite, and BYU being popular for Mormon athletes, TN will have a pretty high hill to climb to get him on "the hill".
