The thing that has me most excited about this year is the presence of leadership.

For all of Dooley's faults (and they are many), it was his failure as a leader that did him in.
He shamed players publicly (and called it accountability)
He made some horrible hires (Sal Sunseri was the worst)
He never won over the love and loyalty of his players.
He failed to handle problematic attitudes (Da'Rick and Bray)

Tyler Bray was an incredible talent, but he was never a leader - on or off the field. Dooley has to share in the blame for this. A great leader brings the best out of those he leads. And we really never saw Bray reach his potential (not even close).

Butch is a leader. The championship mentality and attitude he has instilled in his players so far has been outstanding.
He has rallied the Volnation (when so many were disappointed with his hire).
His players seem to love him.
His coaches are loyal to him and on the same page with him.

I don't know how many wins this can/will translate into this year, because even though we have some great leaders on this team (Ju'Wan James, Tiny, and now, it seems, Jacques Smith), we still don't have a proven leader at QB.

Everyone remembers Al Wilson as the leader of our 1998 national championship team. But in a speech he gave last summer, he said that the real leadership mojo of that team was Tee Martin. He willed them to win. His teammates loved him and rallied behind him. Wilson said something like, "It's got to come from the QB."

I don't know if it will happen this year or not, because leadership does require talent. But I believe in time Butch will make a leader out of one of the QBs presently on our roster. I hope its sooner rather than later...

I think more than anything "your team is an image of who you are as a coach" That is the difference between the team we saw in 2012 and the team we will see in 2013, when they said CBJ was a players coach means that he will grind with the players...not stand on the sidelines and point fingers...some just got it when it comes to coaching college and some don't.

With regards to leadership being present this year on the field AND on the sideline, John Lennon said it best:

Imagine...

We know the most effective leaders lead by example. Someone must step up, interesting to see which player will emerge when the season begins, and I agree with Big Al. The Broncos have done a 360 with Peyton at the helm=leadership.

I think you mean 180. If they did a 360, they're going in the same direction.

Dooley was too busy micro managing to lead. I backed him for most of this time here because he was the UT head coach, but I'm so glad he is gone & we've got a real leader & a real coach here......FINALLY!

I agree the Broncos are a better team with Manning but they were also division champs and won a playoff game in 2011.
