Just read where Jabari Davis is academically ineligible for the Cotton Bowl and will not even be making the trip to Dallas.

:shakehead:

What a pitiful way to end your career . . .

as long as Riggs and Houston show up to play we should be alright, too many frat parties for Davis?

He only had 18 carries all year, it doesn't sound like the J Train got on the tracks this year.

Hard to say that a guy that scored as many TDs as Jabari Davis was a bust, but he never seemed to be the force that everyone wanted him to be.

Yah. A few nice short yardage carries is all I can even remember.

This year's stats, not so much to write home about:
18-34 avg. 1.9 TD 2 Long 14

However, last year:
124-593 avg. 4.6 TD 8 Long 44
For the record, the next highest rushing TD total was, ready. . . . 2, shared by Cedric and Casey.

Actually, before this season, Davis was more of a breakaway threat to score a touchdown than Houston. Cedric always got caught from behind and Davis had a few nice long TDs.

"Cedric always got caught from behind"

Did you even see the JTrain this year? He got dragged on several plays from behind by defensive tackles

Its hard to notice much when a player only gets 18 carries for an entire season! For the record, of Davis 18 carries, not a single one went for negative yardage.... at least according to the official statistics.

I'm sure the coaches have reasons for what they do. Its hard to keep 3 running backs happy and the Houston-Riggs combo is working much better than the Houston-Davis combo of the past 2 seasons.

2002 - Davis' sophomore season he started 5 games and had 565 yds rushing (4.6 avg) and led the Vols with 10 TDs.... had a 62-yd run against S.C (his career long)..... had a 58-yd TD run against Arkansas... Finished the game against Arkansas with 135 yards on 25 carries, which are both career highs ... Scored three touchdowns versus Arkansas as well which earned him SEC Offensive Player of the Week.....

2003 - his junior season he started only 1 game and had 587 yds rushing (4.7 avg) and 8 TDs.... his first carry of the season was a 44-yard run for TD against Fresno State... Earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 78-yard, two touchdown performance during the Vols’ victory over No. 17 Florida in the Swamp ... A 42-yard burst highlighted his nine-carry, 67-yard, two touchdown performance vs. Mississippi State

Through his first 3 seasons, Jabari Davis rushed for 1212 yards on 260 attempts and 20 TDs. For his career, Davis rushed for 1246 yards on 278 attempts and 22 TDs.

When Jabari came to Tennessee, alot of folks wanted to compare him to Jamal Lewis. However, I have always thought he was more of a Jerome Bettis type runner. While at Notre Dame, Bettis rushed for 1912 yards on 337 attempts and 27 TDs.

Had Jabari had his normal 125 carries for 575 yds and 8 TDs this season... he would have finished with 1787 yards on 385 attempts and 28 TDs.... very similar to Jerome Bettis' career stats at Notre Dame.

I always thought that his problem was that that he's a 250 lb running back trapped in a 225 lb body. He probably would have been a very serviceable starting tailback, but I don't think that there's any doubt that we had better options.

The Bettis comparison is eye opening, but you have to consider that Bettis spent a lot of time at fullback and had to split carries with Ricky Waters.

Which also entered into my comparison because Jabari split carries with Cedric Houston in 2002 and 2003. Bettis playing fullback just means he was on the field more and also more involved in the offense than Davis was in 2002 and 2003. It was very clear that the Vols had a need at fullback, and Davis did not step up for whatever reason. I think that factored in Trooper's decision not to play him much this season.

I would not be surprised to see Jabari catch on with some NFL team next year as a free-agent.

Speaking of the fullback. I am impressed with Cory Anderson. He could end up being one of UT's top fullbacks. Anderson had some big blocks this year. He runs well and has good hands. I thought that we were in trouble when Revill left, but Anderson stepped up big time.

I hate to hear that about Jabari. He's another that had loads of talent but it was never actualized. I know the fans on the Florida forum criticized us for not making him the starter. I think they were overrating him. He's good, but not significantly better than Houston or Riggs.
