In the final “Day after Thanksgiving SEC Game on CBS” before the network fully loses the conference’s broadcasting rights, we have the traditional Friday matchup of the last nine years with the Missouri Tigers playing the Arkansas Razorbacks in the “Battle Line Rivalry.”
Coming off a near miracle 4th-and-17 comeback last weekend, in possibly their best season since 2013 and 2014, the Missouri Tigers look to close out the season with a win to (virtually) all but clinch an at-large spot in a New Year’s 6 Bowl (most likely the Peach, Cotton, or Fiesta) with a win against a newer end-of-the-year rival, the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Tigers are led by a trio of Saint Louis natives in QB Branden Cook (3077 yards, 18 TD, 6 int), a former Division II, Missouri native, and now SEC leading rusher Cody Schrader (1272 yards, 12 TDs) and a very talented receiving corps leader Luther Burden III (1142 yards, 8 TD). Not to leave out one of their more unique weapons: their 243 lb kicker - and owner of the SEC-record longest field goal (61 yards) - Harrison Mevis, a.k.a “The Thiccker Kicker.” Though there have been some struggles with some of the more sound defenses.
However, while great at creating pressure and sacks, building injuries to various positions on the other side of the ball has left a defense with quite a bit of holes, especially against passing games where the QB also has significant mobility: LSU’s Jayden Daniels tore them up for 259 passing yards, 130 rushing yards, and 4 total TDs; more recently, a 5-6 Florida team marched up and down the field with ease in a second half that almost saw a major upset, save for a 4th and 17 pass.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, a 4-7 Arkansas team comes into this game having won 2 of their last 3 games and secured Sam Pittman’s continuance as Head Coach. Led by Arkansas’s all-time passing yards and passing TDs leader, QB KJ Jefferson (2105 passing yards, 432 rushing yards, TDs, and 21 total TDs), Arkansas has struggled to say the least, but recently upset Florida.
Arkansas also managed to keep it close against a lot of better SEC teams, losing by 7 or less points against LSU, Ole Miss, and Alabama. It could be interesting to see which Arkansas will show up to play Missouri today as they look to play the spoiler to their season.
