Here is a snippet from the Gainesville Sun quoting Urban Meyer on the status of the team physically. Such a refreshing change in attitude. The fact that he is aware of the Gators' softness at the end of games last year is, to me, a damn good sign.

"Hard," said Meyer when asked to describe the camp. "There's only one question I have: how tough are we? We have good people here. I think we're very athletic. Depth is a major, major concern. But I bet if you polled the top 30 teams in the world, depth is a concern. Maybe the USCs of the world, from what I heard they're three-deep. We're not three-deep. I've never been three-deep.
"What's going to happen when it's time to go win a game with a minute-and-a-half to go? I don't know."

I would tend to agree that it is good that he recognize that - however wouldn't you be a little more than concerned if he didn't???

not like it wasn't heavily publicized about your "late game collapses"

Yes, but Zook never seemed to pick up on the fact that conditioning in August has a lot to do with staying power in October and November. More than anything else, that is why I think Zook made a horrible game coach.

Do you remember the game we played versus Michigan in tampa a coule of years back? The team had no discipline, looked lethargic, and generally had zero interest in playing that game. Meyer won't put up with that nonsense and I do think with 20 year old kids that makes a difference.

Yes, I do expect the Gators heads to be in the game this season. They didn't look like it too much last season.

I thought Zook was all about conditioning.

I mean, the clown wouldn't even let spectators sit at practice. That doesn't sound like a coach who would be soft on conditioning.

He may or may not have been soft in the coaching department. I am not convinced that Florida has bettered themselves with Meyer.

If Zook consistently wins 6 or 7 games a year at Illinois it will be proof that either a] he wasn't that bad a coach b] the talent level was low when he got there and wasn't given enough time to finish the job.

With the talent level now, Meyer will probably be considered a failure if he doesn't win at least 10 games. Most are putting the Gators anywhere from 10-13 in the polls and that would probably require 10 wins.

I'm not saying that's fair. I'm just saying that's probably where we are what with college football being the monster it is today.

I'm not sure if the late game meltdowns were a sign of poor coaching, poor conditioning, or the fact that Zook needed another year to beef up the talent, depth wise, to keep up with the heavy hitters in the SEC.

While I do believe the SEC is the strongest conference in the nation, year in and year out, you're going to have a difficult time knocking almost any Big 10 schedule. While it's probably not as tough as some SEC schools, you'll find any coach who does have winning seasons at Illinois will be considered a great coach and most likely won't be there long.

Time will tell.

One thing's almost certain. They'll give him a farier shot at it than Florida did.
