The media's general vibe about Tennessee most likely hiring Strong is that it is an "excellent hire"... And I get the feeling that they think it may be the best of the "Big 3" openings (UT, Arky, & Auburn)... Saying that while the Arky is great that it was a shock and they hired a proven winner but that he would naturally have growing pains in the SEC having only coached and recruited in the Midwest area... Auburn is solid, because he knows the program, but no big splash.

Brings me to think, if the general opinion outside of the board is that we made as solid a hire as the rest, or BETTER... Why is half the board freaking out?

Is it because you set unrealistic expectations with a NFL super bowl winner who's never coached in college? .. Or a guy who's already making 5+ Mil at a huge program in Oklahoma?

If you look at it realistically, you shouldn't be very dissapointed.. Of the Big 3 hires, Charlie Strong knows the area and has had proven Defenses and has won big basically everywhere he's been. This is the guy the players want, this is the guy that may turn recruits heads.

Get behind the guy if he's indeed announced, because it would probably be the biggest splash hire of the silly season.

Gruden has been out for so long that he's taken on mythical proportions. Good coach, but the bump he's gotten on this board has been completely unrealistic.

He would improve the defense, and is alot better than Dooley. I just hope he is able to put together a really good staff because that is just as important as the head coach.

Whoever we hire, they will have my total support because they will coach the team I have grown up loving and support through and through!:loco:

Looking at all the schools picking up good coaches (Arkansas today with Bilema), I'm getting a little nervous. I think we are getting some no's, not necessarily because of recent problems, but the enormity of our stadium, facilities and history. A lot to bring back. It's going to take an Urban Meyer type and I hope that is what Hart is concentrating on.

I've seen that his recruiting classes have been behind Kensucky and Tulsa.... Solid top 70 recruiting.

That's what I was thinking...sure Strong is not Jon Gruden but the media and even former player and former Vols and NFLers are pro Strong but fans are not...

I will get behind Strong if he is hired. I wanted Gruden...am still on Gruden until someone else is hired, but whoever takes the podium and takes over the Tennessee Volunteers will be MY coach at MY school and I will support him to my fullest.

If you are talking about Wisconsin, they are number 30 right now. Louisville isn't in the top 40 and that makes me nervous about Strong.

Strong is recruiting at a mid tier football program in a mid tier conference. I'm not worried about his recruiting ranking considering he has Louisville in a BCS game. He's been doing a lot with a little. I get the feeling his recruiting would fair much better at UT.

That makes sense.

Help me, Baby Jesus.

Where do you think Jim Tressel's recruiting classes ranked when he was at Youngstown State? What about Urb's when he was at Bowling Green? And yet somehow those guys seemed to do OK when they moved to the big time.

It's tough to recruit to a place like Louisville. You're not going to have a top-10 class there, and that's just the way it is. The guy is building solid classes, getting better talent than Louisville has gotten historically, and winning football games. Judge the guy by standards that have some basis in reality.

This board has no clue

exactly.
Charlie Strong is a GREAT hire.

I'm extremely excited about the possibility of landing this guy.

The people freaking out on this board are 16 year old kids and people who have only watched UT football for like 5 minutes. Anyone who knows how this conference works knows Strong is solid.

What are the chances it is Gruden when it's all said and done?

The difference between a good hire and a great hire is the difference between the top half and the bottom half of the SEC. The divide is getting wider and it takes a great coach and a great recruiter to jump the chasm. Looks like we're hiring mid-level and mid-budget, which will probably get us back to mid-pack in the mid-term. A lot of people think that's not good enough or fast enough-- hence the upcoming meltdown.

The people on this board are delusional. We also cannot see the forest from the trees.

My honest opinion:

40% Are just pissed it's not Gruden
30% Are just morons and have no clue
30% are inbred hillbillies

I don't see a problem with wanting either Gundy or Fedora or some other coach more. But the melt down that is happening over a potential Strong hire has me scratching my head here.
