If anything, SCe's rapid decline is all about a rapid decline in talent, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Two years ago, they had Jadeveon Clowney anchoring that D. Now, they have one of the worst defenses in the SEC. Still shouldn't be losing to The Citadel, but really a lot of their struggles were somewhat inevitable as questions surrounding Spurrier's retirement intensified. In a way, Spurrier's retirement became a self-fulfilling prophecy, because recruiting dropped off a cliff as new recruits were afraid to go to SCe with Spurrier likely to leave. This then made the team less competitive, forcing Spurrier to retire.
