Yep - I'm finally in agreement...

It is stupid for an SEC team to hire as it's head coach someone from one of those flat western states where all they run is a spread offense...

It is stupid for an SEC team to hire as it's head coach someone who has never coached in the SEC already...

It is stupid for an SEC team to hire as it's head coach someone who has a 12 win season and was edged out of playing for the BCS championship by another team's reputation...

It is stupid for an SEC team to hire as it's head coach someone who is not a defensive minded coach, first, second, and third...

It is stupid for an SEC team to hire as it's head coach someone who has never recruited in the SEC area before...

I THANK YOU ALL FOR SETTING ME STRAIGHT.

I am now 120% on board with the idea that Florida should never have hired Urban Meyer.

That would eliminate at least half of the current coaches in the SEC

Urban Meyer's Utah teams played tough hard-nosed defense. They weren't top 10-15 in any defensive stats. But they were fundamentally sound, and Urban got the most out of those guys on D. He knew, and so did the fans, he would have a huge talent pool to draw from on defense at Florida. Meyer totally got it. He knew without good defense, he'd get "*****slapped" in the SEC. Thus, Charlie Strong, I think, was hired, to make the defense very good. Urban displayed, early on in the interview process, that he understood that defense was going to be paramount. Urban wasn't as big of a gamble as people thought. Afterall, his spread offense was a bit different from others. Urban featured alot more running the football.

Urban Meyer had Gary Anderson. Whose at Utah State and kicking ass. Urban Meyer had Strong after that...:

In Meyer's two seasons at Utah, his defenses allowed 349.7 and 350.3 yards per game. The average MWC offense racked up 385 and 374 in those years, so his defenses were typical for that conference; nothing special.

I like Gundy, but to be honest the bolded statement is ridiculous. He lost to Iowa State, again a unranked Iowa State, where as Bama lost to LSU, which in my opinion was the second best team in the country last year. I hate Bama as much as the next guy, but to say they got in based on name recognition alone is stupid. If you lose to Iowa state you don't deserve to go the National Championship, period.

Comparing Gundy to Urban Meyer is ludicrous.

Statistically, Gundy at OSU is almost EXACTLY like Urban Meyer at Utah.

On the basis of experience, Gundy at OSU is very similar to Urban Meyer at Utah.

But, I won't let those facts get in the way of your opinion.

Also an interesting opinion, but if you were to look at the voting, OSU missed being in the BCSNCG by six votes. Literally, OSU was edged out. Barely.

Screw Bama. They had their shot at LSU and lost at home. They didn't win their conference or even their division in the conference. Oh, did I say screw Bama?

Let me begin by saying that sarcasm is a subtle art best used in small doses, not as a club to beat us to death with your points. Now that that's out of the way, while I agree with most of what you're saying I believe the last two are up for debate. The saying, "Defense wins championships" isn't an idiom, it's a fact. I'm not saying we have to hire a defensive guru as our HC, but an offensive minded HC better bring a top tier DC with him if he wants to be here long. To the last point, I don't necessarily think the HC has to have an extensive background in SEC recruiting, but, just as I previous stated, he better have some on his staff that do. I know the argument will be made that Saban, and Meyer, and Miles didn't have deep SEC ties when they arrived, but they didn't have to. The schools those coaches had success at have the luxury of being in states that produce some of the best D-1 players in the nation; Tennessee is a different animal. We have to have a coach that can go well outside the borders of our state, whether that be w/in the Southeast region or all the way out to Northwest, and recruit talent to Tennessee. The job certainly isn't for everyone, but hopefully this time we'll get the right one.

:)

Meyer at Utah:
22-2 (avg. 11-1), 2 conference championships in 2 years, 2-0 record against biggest rival (BYU)

Gundy at OSU:
65-33 (avg. 8-4), 1 conference championship in 8 years, 1-7 record against biggest rival (Oklahoma)

Try again.

And if I had to guess the reason that is was so close was because Bama didn't win their division much less the conference. Again I like Gundy and think he would be a really good hire, but OSU didn't deserve to be in that game. I would say the same thing about Bama if (hypothetically) they had lost to someone like Kentucky.
