Our new system (although it hasn't been seen by any recruits) is really helping us out. We should be able to beat almost any other team when it comes to recruiting pro-style players. That coupled with our facilities and staff will bring in the firepower on O to destroy the defenses around the league. I really think this system is perfect for beating Florida and Bama's defensive schemes. Also can't wait to play LSU. Chavis's scheme should be easy to manipulate.

except for the ones who have access to computers and or television? you can see the plays we're going to run by watching old tapes of USC/Oakland. you can see the wrinkles Chaney will bring by watching old Purdue tapes.

Chavis's scheme should be easy to manipulate.

except that he'll have a different head coach supervising and Les Miles is known as a gambler. Miles might actually veto Chavis' calls and ask for more aggressive plays. LSU also currently has more depth and playmakers than we do, which will help him out tremendously.

I was talking about recruits haven't seen the Vols with this system. Also Chavis can have what he wants on D if he calls that Vanilla crap we'll beat the heck outta them.

Chavis' good defenses all had elite DL talent. He'll have that at LSU. He'll look much, much better in Baton Rouge than he has the last few years.

well I read an interesting remark the other day about USC's offensive development since Lane left. USC wasn't as explosive after he left for Oakland. Some of their prized signees also haven't worked out the way they had hoped. I believe he may have been a better scout/motivator than he's given credit, having served in Chow's shadow.

Carroll's focus is on the defensive side and it makes me wonder if Sarkisian can develop talent the way Lane did. We'll know in a few years on Sarkisian.

Don't underestimate the power of the head coach. Phil had a lot of influence on how we played---playing not to lose and then trying to beat people in the 4th was an incredibly stupid strategy. I just don't understand it.

He wanted vintage SEC football and not modern pyrotechnics.

Chavis is old-school, but I think he might look better with a different general looking over his shoulder.

Is the system more of a run to open the pass up or what?

It's a take what the defense gives you O. Also it's a matchup type of system. It's about matching our most dangerous playmakers on their worst players and exposing the weak links time and time again.

I figure it will be a traditional pro-style offense that is very balanced. They will probably pass a little more, but I would say it will be pretty balanced.

We'll see about that. I've never seen a worse defensive gameplan than the second half adjustments against UCLA.

It will be hard to look much better than 5th in the nation. I agree it seemed soft at times, but down here in southern middle Tn. 5th=good.

It wasn't there when we needed it. UGA ripped us a new one. His defense benefited a lot from teams only having to score 17 points to have the game wrapped up.

That's what I was thinking. The D was good at best. It never looked dominant. The Georgia game we were getting worked up and down the field. I didn't realize we were 5th until late in the season.

Not dominant? I do understand we had a garbage season. The amount of time those guys spent on the field and still 5th? I will take that for next year. If the new offensive system can keep them off the field, we should be in business. GO VOLS!
PS 5th is pretty much dominant even with a bad record.

Let's be realistic. The defense was good. But against Bama, Florida( who had the game won in the first quarter), and Georgia we looked rather ordinary. Berry and Wilson were the only two guys that stood out in those games.

The defensive numbers were also inflated because we gave up really good field position all season. The other team didn't usually have to go a long way to score. Also, we played against some terrible offenses (auburn, wyoming, vandy, kentucky, south carolina), and some of those scored enough against us to win.

I think our d was good, but it wasn't the 5th best defense in the country.

Considering we had a top level defense last year and they were on the field 66% of the time. Chavis has almost always had a great defense. The only thing I hated was the mustang defense.

Say hello to the reason we lost against UCLA.

Chavis is a hot and cold coordinator. He'll dial up the blitz packages like crazy for one quarter and the next quarter he'll be playing prevent. In the UCLA game we we're getting pressure like crazy when we were blitzing. All of a sudden we stop blitzing and back off the receivers. It was terrible. Seeing that they didn't have a deep threat why were we backing off these guys?
