About 6 weeks ago I did a summary of stats to show just where we stand defensively. Now, I'd like to do the same for our offense and special teams.

In 2013:

. We had the 103 best offense in the country. Only two other SEC teams had a worse over all offense, Florida and Kentucky.

. We averaged an outstanding, sarcasm inserted here, 164.9 passing yards per game. That put us at 13th out of 14th in the SEC in passing yards per game average, only topping Arkansas outstanding 148.5 average.

. We ran for an average of 188.4 yards per game. This was good enough for 9th best in the SEC. Not bad, but we still can improve.

. We held the 12th best redzone offense in the SEC. We only scored 25 TDs on 44 redzone drives.

. On 3rd downs our completion percentage was 35.8. 12th best in the SEC.

. We had 1,979 total passing yards. That was good for 110 best in country. We also had 12 TDs and 17 Ints on the year :disappointed:.

. We gave up only 15 sacks all year! That was good for 13 best in the country :pepper:

. On special teams the Vols held a kick return average that was 3rd best in the SEC of 23.8 yards. Great work especially with DY out most the year. However, we had no TDs on kickoffs, but only three teams in the SEC did all year.

. On special teams, the Vols held the 4th best punt return average in the SEC with a 8.9 yards.

. On special teams we held the worst kickoff coverage in the SEC. We gave up an average of 36.8 yards per kickoff, and we only had 19 touch backs all year.

. On special teams we held nationally the 17th best punt per average at 43.8 yards per punt. Palardy

Steps For Improvement:

1. Get our QBs more easy looks throughout the game. Whoever the QB is come August, we need to get them going with easy passes.

2. Develop the run to set up the play action. Our run game is only going to get better as out young o-line improves and Hurd, etc develop. Blair will be a beast run blocking tackle, and our interior -lineman should be more mobil this year. Our best bet to win this year is to control the game with the run, and hopefully by running the ball so much we can set up the play action for a big play down the field.

3. Scheme for more big plays. We have to find ways to generate big plays on offense by getting our playmakers the ball.

4. FEED THE PIGGY! Again, we need big plays and PIG is the best play maker we have at WR when the ball is in his hands. We need to get PIG the ball in end rounds, jet sweeps, screen passes, and short slant patterns in hopes he can make a big play for us.

5. Be more active. With Wolfe and Helm now here we must become more active before plays. We need to get guys in motion and we need to try to throw defenses off by running multiple plays out of the same sets.

6. Develop a power run game. I have no problem with the spread offense, but with Wolfe now here as a blocker, I'd like to see some 2 TE single back formations or something to generate some more power sets in the redzone. This should also set up the play action for a easy throw to a TE or WR in the endzone hopefully.

7. Get the TEs, aka Wolfe and Helm, and our tall WRs involved in the redzone. With North, Croom, Malone, Pearson, Creamer (though I hope he moves to SLB), Wolfe, and Helm there's no reason we shouldn't be able to score efficiently in the redzone by passing the ball. The TE position is a dangerous weapon in the redzone because usually it's a mismatch in favor of the offense. We need to take advantage of the size we now posses at both WR and TE.

8. Develop our team mentality so we don't beat ourselves. We have to stop dropping balls and blowing plays with miscommunication and lack of focus. We simply can't afford to beat ourselves by leaving drives unfinished due to the lack of communication or focus by our players.

9. Develop better kick protection by allowing these great athletic freshman to play on special teams right away. It's a no brainer.

10. Allow Vic, Malone, and Evan Berry to compete for all returning duties immediately. I love DY as he's a Knoxville guy, but we have to get some guys in coverage who posses a true threat every time they get the ball.

11. Give Medley the confidence he needs to succeed now, because he has big shoes to fill if he becomes our punter from day 1.

Yeah our offense should improve greatly next year. I HOPE PIG can play like he played in the UGA consistently. It should help having better talent around him at the other WR positions.

It will also help if Josh "Brick Hands" Smith aka D. Young 2.0 isn't on the field.

The kick coverage was nice under Dools. Don't know what happened this year.

Also, a key is doing everything possible from keeping the wheels falling off with the new OL.

(Insert pic of Darth Vader)

You underestimate the POWER of terrible QB play.

Exactly! Everyone knew we had to run the ball, and we still did well. Butch tried to put and square peg into a circular hole. We had a power, zone pass blocking line being asked to man up and block down field. We just didn't play to the strengths of our team due to implementing a new system, and the stats back it up. Our boring offense was mostly due to not having a QB to trust and running the few run plays we had that allowed for our slow offensive lineman to block efficiently in.

I don't know why people complained about the simplicity of the offense. What should Butch have done, opened up the playbook with the QBs on the field?

People aren't understanding how badly the OL will be missed. Next year will start off pretty rough. I will be shocked if the Oklahoma game isn't a disaster on offense.

That's really going out on a limb. That's pretty much saying what we were saying after '12 with the defense...It cant get any worse.

I don't think Mile Baj. and CBJ did a good job of finding unique ways to get our play makers the ball; however, the QB situation didn't help. In terms of offense line, I think our o-line will be much improved in run blocking but will get man handled for awhile in pass protection. The only real problem I will have come August is if Worley is starting and we still run a read option for every run play. Worley can't run a read option offense the way it should be ran, and it only hurts our team. We may go 5-7 but I hope we go 5-7 playing to the strengths of a guy like Worley or letting Dobbs or Ferg getting some needed reps.

It was even refreshing to see CBJ draw a penality for crawling up the refs a$$. Thats something Dooley would have never done.

No doubt. There's so many Angry Jones pictures out there now, it's great. Personally, I love it when a football coach gets fired up on the sidelines and I think the players like it too.

All Great points OP . My take as well on offense ..

For Pig to become more of a factor on offense. One of the new additions need to become big time players for us. aka immediate impact. Pig and North were the only game changers we had on offense last year. Opposing teams knew we were going to at least run a few jet sweeps to pig. They were ready most of the time. He his a prototypical play maker at the slot position. We just never had two outside threats to demand attention.

So Pearson/Croom/Malone have to be become the players we hope them to be. That frees up space for Pig to do what he does.

QB play will be the deciding factor on what kind of year we have next year. We have to put up points. Running game will be interesting. Always loved Lane more than Neal, so we will see how he can handle the grind. Big Expectations for Hurd having all spring and summer to prepare.

OL will be work in progress. Gotta find the right group of guys that fit well together. We need nasty in our OL for this offense to progress. The coaches did a good job bringing some good prospects in the OL recruitment. So we will see who steps up. Biggest unknown.

TE play will change dramatically. More competition at the position will warden hard work from the older guys. Helm is a play maker through the air and Wolf is a beast. Real excited about this group.

I didn't need a breakout to know off play calling suspect all year n we have avg qb's playing at this time..

It cracks me up that the everyone wanted Dobbs then made excuses for his terrible passing.. Classic..

I don't that I agree about the O line next year. Kerbyson and Crowder were in the rotation and proved themselves. Jackson may have started but I believe the coaches redshirted him to have 2 more years with a him. That's three strong starters, then you can add Blair who has all the talent to be a star.

Wiesman was a monster as a freshman as well and for depth we will have Sanders as a RS Fresh, and Coleman and Raulerson are already here. Coleman will definitely be able to play. Pair was also in the rotation.

Most importantly, these guys have been in this system for a year now, over a year and a half when the season starts. That should make up for their overall lack of experience.

This is depressing

??? WRs and TEs upgraded, RBs possibly more talented or no worse than equal to what we had, QBs more experienced, OL more experienced than the departed guys were when they became starters.

But, if you really have your heart set on being depressed ... :ermm: :dunno:
