Auburn has had the upper hand in the series in recent history, winning 13 of the last 16 matchups. The Vols will be looking to win their first series against the Tigers since 2011.

NOTABLE
Success vs. Ranked Foes

Tennessee has played some of its best baseball when facing top 25 teams, posting an 8-2 record against ranked opponents this season, including a pair of sweeps over top 10 foes Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Since Tony Vitello took over as head coach in 2018, the Vols have posted 41 wins over ranked foes, including 20 victories over teams ranked in the top 10 and six wins over top-ranked teams - Ole Miss (x3) in 2022, Arkansas in 2021, Texas Tech in 2020 and Florida in 2018.

Vitello's record against ranked teams at UT is 41-40 and UT has won 12 series over ranked teams during his tenure.

Best of the Best
With a series sweep over Florida last weekend, Tennessee became the first team in SEC history to start league play 17-1. The only other team to start 16-1 was the 1951 Vols, who finished as the runner-up at the College World Series.

Blade is Back
Preseason All-American pitcher Blade Tidwell made his first SEC start of the year last Saturday at Florida and looked like the dominant force everyone expected to see this season before he was shut down for the first half of the year due to injury. Tidwell gave up just two hits in 4.2 shutout innings while striking out five batters.

Vols Cleaning Crew Back in Business
Tennessee recorded its eighth series sweep this season last weekend at Florida, setting a new single-season program record. The only other UT team to even sweep seven opponents was the 1994 SEC Championship team.

Last weekend's sweep of the Gators was the Vols' first in Gainesville since 2001 and marked the first time UF was swept at home in SEC play since 2006.

Not including tournaments, the Vols have recorded 20 series sweeps since 2018 when Tony Vitello took over as head coach.

It will be a battle this weekend. Auburn is a good team with a lineup of upperclassmen, including Sonny DiChiara. They also have a solid pitching staff. Look forward to a hard fought, great series. Our guys will have their hands full.

Auburn prepares for tough test at No. 1 Tennessee

Quotes from Coach Thompson and Auburn players:

“People are telling me that nobody can stay on the same field with them,” Auburn’s Butch Thompson said of Tennessee. “It will be very interesting. This looks like a daunting task. We’ll have to come up with some plans, whatever twists and turns we’ll need to make. “They’ll get my full attention now. They already have the full respect of the country. Not only the best team in America this year, but people are telling me it’s maybe the best team they have ever seen.”

Obviously, we have a lot of confidence,” center fielder Kason Howell said. “We’re playing as a team and we’re picking each other up 1-9 on the field and on the mound. It’s a great feeling heading to Knoxville knowing that we’ve got that confidence.”

A senior who has played in a bunch of big games during his career with the Tigers, senior shortstop Brody Moore said it’s time to see what this team is capable of doing vs. such strong competition. We’re ready to get up there and go,” Moore said. “We’re excited. We’re going up there to play ball.”

The comments from Butch are flattering and all, but don’t be silly Butch, we can be beat and have been beaten 3 times. This team knows the challenge ahead.

Auburn hits well for average, and they get on base. But they are not a power hitting club 1-9 like we are. Our pitching staff basically takes away the base on balls by filling up the strike zone with fastballs. Knowing they'll have lots of stikes to swing at, they might try to single and double us to death at the plate.

They don't pitch as well as we do (Who does?), and don't think they've seen a team with our power. I'm surprised more teams haven't tried to do to us what Tennessee Tech did - throw that slow, looping offsped stuff at us.

So we'll see if our power pitching and hitting can overcome their style of play. If you take their team scoring and era and compare to our team scoring and era, and IF averages prevail, we should win each game by an average of 4 runs.

Well, I did it today. My Hog acquaintance said today he hopes to see Tennessee in Hoover.
I responded with, be careful what you wish for.
Why, he said(with a smirk)
My reply, because Tennessee is the one team that can kick Arkansas’ @$$! And I don’t mean just beat your hogs, I mean KICK YOUR @$$!!
I don’t think he cared much for my response.
