The 23-6 (13-3) Vols can clinch the outright SEC regular season title tonight with a win in Columbia over the surprise of the SEC, the 24-5 (12-4) South Carolina Gamecocks. The Vols are also in strong contention for a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history and a victory over the Gamecocks keeps the Vols on that path. The Vols last loss in Columbia was in the 2019-2020 season. The Vols have won the last two meetings on the Gamecocks home floor, 81-57 in 2022, and 85-42 last year. This is an entirely different team in year two for Lamont Paris, the current favorite for SEC Coach of the Year. Tennessee is a 5.5 point favorite.

Coach Barnes on the 2023-24 South Carolina squad.

“Well, one, how well they’re coached. A team that doesn’t commit a lot of mistakes. A team that knows exactly what they’re looking for. A team that can very quickly exploit the matchups that they want to get if you do a lot of switching and they get you in a position where they can get the switch they want. They took great advantage of it here in a lot of different ways. But just extremely fundamental, plays the pace that they want to play with. And Lamont has done just an incredible job. One of the great jobs coaching jobs, not just this year, but as long as I’ve been in basketball, watching what he’s done and the way he’s turned it around and where they are today. And they’ve got good players, don’t make no bones about it, they’ve got good players. You wouldn’t be able to be where they are today in this league because it’s, again, we’ve talked about how competitive it is in this league. It may be the most competitive ever. For them to be playing for a championship, speaks volumes not only about the players, but also the coaching staff.”

Vols with a chance to clinch the regular season championship. Those don’t come around every year. Vols with a great opportunity. I like the mindset of our team, great coaches, veteran players tells me we will be ready to seize this opportunity. I like the Vols tonight, I think our team understands what’s at stake. Go Vols! Beat Carolina! I’m thinking you will see more orange than you expect in Colonial Life arena.

Rare air for the Vols.
HIGH-CALIBER COMPANY
• Tennessee, Arizona, Kansas and Purdue are the only four teams to earn an AP top-five ranking in each of the past three seasons (2021-24).
• In addition, Tennessee, Baylor, Houston and Kansas are the only four schools ranked in the AP top six each of the past four years (2020-24).
• UT is one of only six teams to reach the AP top six in four of the last six seasons (2018-24), joining Baylor, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas (all six) and Kentucky. Those are six of the only 10 schools in the AP top five in at least four of the past six years, alongside Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina and Virginia.
• The Vols are one of only 12 teams to earn an AP top- two ranking in at least two of the past six seasons. The others are Arizona, Baylor (three), Connecticut, Duke (four), Gonzaga (five), Kansas (four), Kentucky, Michigan, Purdue, UCLA and Virginia.

Tennessee played its absolute worst basketball against SC earlier in the year and we still only lost by 4.

Personally, I think we’re still the better team.

Just need to come out with the same mindset and play physical.
I think there's an overwhelming sized collective that thinks UT is better

Will Pat Adams be attending this game or does the SEC keep us guessing for Saturday vs UK?
