The Official Duke/UNC 2018/19 Basketball Thread!!!

I haven’t heard that. I make a point to ignore Nick Wright, but best prospect since Lebron in no way is saying he is Lebron
I know, I agree with that. But they know people will make that association, which is why they mention LeBron's name in connection with Zion's to begin with.

I agree they’re trying to drive excitement by saying Lebron’s name, but I’m not willing to concede it’s an attempt to say he’s that good.

All it is is a hedge though. If Zion does become a LeBron-type of player, they'll claim they called it. If he doesn't, they can say "Well I never said he would be as good as LeBron," which is technically accurate. It's a statement constructed so that no matter what happens with his career, the pundit can plausibly claim to be correct.

It's just so unfair to use the name of any player, former or current, who is one of the best to ever play and associate their name with a current prospect. There are just much better ways to say it, like "Zion is one of the most impressive prospects over the last 15 years," which is a totally true statement, but I suppose one that doesn't attract as many clicks.

On one hand you're complaining they aren't specific enough, and then you're suggesting they be less specific.

Oh come on, they clearly are saying that wanting people to make the association. It's the only reason to bring LeBron's name up in a comparison.

You could say "he's the best prospect in 16 years" but then you'd have to look up when Lebron was drafted to make sure "16" is accurate. The viewer/reader might need to look up who was drafted 16 years ago. It's the exact same statement, it's just easier to say "since Lebron", and it's easier to digest.

No, I complain that they traffick in making statements that can be correct no matter what the outcome of his career is. They are tautologies.

I guess with all the clamoring about fake classes in this thread (and its predecessors), I must have missed all the hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth about fake research.

Duke University pays $112M to settle faked-research whistleblower suit

But don't let that detract from the "Duke does it the right way" narrative that is so dearly held by its supporters.

And I'm not trying to crow about it, I just think everyone (UNC, Duke, Tennessee, Alabama...everyone) should completely drop any semblance of debate over who is cleaner, or "does things the right way" more than the others. There is corruption everywhere...it is what it is.

It doesn't. But most of the Duke supporters take such delight over the wrongdoing at UNC (which was far more widespread than just athletes), while completely ignoring the fact Duke has its own skeletons in the closet.

And, although this is admittedly a far reach, I don't think it's beyond comprehension that Duke's stellar reputation in the medical research field is part of the total package that would make Duke an attractive destination for a blue-chip recruit...especially when juxtaposed with the almost certain negative recruiting that is afforded to Duke coaches as it relates to the UNC academic ordeal.

Come on, bro.

Don’t pull a muscle with that stretch.

One school’s fraud directly involved student athletes in multiple sports.

Unless those fake grants at Duke went into researching indestructible shoes for Zion, there’s virtully no correlation between the two.

I admitted it was a reach. And in my OP on the matter, I clearly stated that I'm not trying to crow. But the Duke folks need to quit acting like the institution is as clean and pure as the wind-driven snow.

I had actually added to my post while you were replying...addressing your points (and admitting the reach of my argument).

And, the perpetrator is reported to have purchased personal items with some of the grant money...some research on better shoes would have ended up being a good investment!

I don't think most Duke folks do this as much as maybe the media does. Duke has plenty of issues with racism and Larry Moneta being an embarrassment, among other things.

If anyone should know about being as pure as the wind driven snow, or those Crisp October nights, or the dogwoods blooming it should come from the University of the People.

Username short for Charles Kuralt there Chuckie ?
