Sweet 16, Sweet 16, Sweet 16....do it with me now!!!
1. If you still have any question whether JRich can shoulder the scoring load next season, what game have you been watching? Stone cold stud. He is the most versatile and complete player on the team.
2. Stokes has 61 pts, 45 rebs, 18-32 FGs, & 24-28 FTs. He is just eating rebounds and winning games at the FT line by helping us to keep the leads we build by hitting them.
3. Jeronne Maymon is playing his best basketball of the season. He is realizing he doesn't have to do it all, and is contributing all over.
4. Barton found his shot again, but he could stand to be a tad more judicious with his shot selection. He played great tonight. His steal on the first possession set the tone defensively.
5. This team has learned to play at any pace while still controlling the tempo offensively. There were a few times tonight when they allowed Mercer to force them into some poor shot selection by settling for long jumpers, but for the most part, we attacked and got the ball into the paint which led to the FT discrepancy.
6. Speaking of fouls, talk about a tale of two halves. The first half, the officials let them play outside the paint, the second half, they called every touch foul within 25 feet of the basket. That's tough to adjust to, but we managed amd took advantage ourselves by continuing to work the defense off the dribble and in the paint.
7. We are getting very little in terms of offense from the bench, and that is somewhat concerning. We need to get 10 ppg from DT, Moore, and Reese.
8. You could see the emotion on Martin's face in postgame interview. He showed plenty of emotion on the sidelines, and was very animated. You can tell he has lived for this moment. So proud for him.
9. Very classy of Mercer to salute their fans, even in an emotional defeat. Very classy.
10. I said it in another thread, but if nothing else was gained from last year's NIT loss to Mercer than an appreciation for taking every opponent seriously despite the name on the front of the jersey, it was well worth it. This is the kind of basketball you hope to be playing in March, and I think they learned a valuable lesson in humility in that defeat.
Go Vols! Beat Meatchicken!
