Former Tennessee and NBA standout Dale Ellis will become the fourth UT men's basketball player to have his jersey retired when the program hangs his No. 14 from the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters prior to the game Saturday.

A native of Marietta, Ga., and two-time All-American, Ellis suited up for the Vols and head coach Don DeVoe from 1979-83.

Ellis was twice named the SEC Player of the Year (1982 and 1983), and he was a three-time first-team All-SEC selection.

As a junior in 1981-82, he led the Vols to a 20-10 (13-5 SEC) record and the SEC Championship.

He was picked ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1983 NBA Draft and went on to play 17 seasons in the NBA for six different teams.

More than 50 Tennessee lettermen are expected to be in attendance Saturday.

All lettermen in attendance will be recognized on the court at halftime, and several Vols who played alongside Dale Ellis from 1979-83 will join him on the floor during his pregame jersey retirement ceremony.

Former UT head coach Don DeVoe, who lead the Vols from 1978-89 also will be present.

Tennessee leads the all-time series with Vanderbilt 113-71, dating to 1922. In Knoxville, the Volunteers have a 69-17 edge (20-6 at Thompson-Boling Arena).

Just 181.63 miles separate UT's Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville and Vanderbilt's Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.

Tennessee's 113 wins over the Commodores are the most by the Vols over any opponent, and only Kentucky (217 games) has been an opponent of the Vols more times than Vanderbilt (184).

Tennessee was 7-2 vs. Vanderbilt during Dale Ellis' career as a Vol.

These programs' strength and conditioning coaches are brothers. Tennessee's Nicodemus Christopher is the younger brother of Vandy's Garry Christopher.

A Tennessee win would give the Vols an 18-13 record against Kevin Stallings-coached teams (18-12 with Stallings as Vandy's coach).

Vols freshman point guard Darius Thompson is a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn. He verbally committed to Vanderbilt before re-opening his recruitment and eventually signing with UT.

I am a University of Tennessee student, and have been through the worst of times and the best of times. While I do not post often you can see by my join date that I'm not some new troll. But I can not stomach what is happening on the basketball court any longer. This is eerily similar to what happened at the end of the Dooley era. Therefore I plan on going to the game in the morning with the goal of starting a Bring Back Bruce chant. This is naturally the next step for the fans to take in order to show the athletic department that we fans and alumni have had enough of the mediocrity. Shabbat shalom. #BBB

I totally agree with you. If you do indeed start this chant tomorrow I will definitely join in.

You seem like a reasonable person, I'm curious as to why you would do that to the players? I'm curious as to why you think it's okay to do that to the current coach, in front of his family, 50 former players, including Dale Ellis who is having his jersey retired.

If we win tomorrow, the Mizzou game will be well attended, why?

First off I will stand and applaud Dale Ellis like I did any other letterman that was honored during my time on the hill. I do recognize that Coach Martin has a family and that these types of coaching turbulences can be hard for him and his family. But he was paid handsomely to be our basketball coach and the team has drastically underperformed in a very down SEC. I am a business student and one of the main things I have learned in the Haslam Business Building is to make strategic decisions and look long term and not short term. The basketball program will not go anywhere with Coach Martin at the helm. Meanwhile we have a coach that still lives in Knoxville that took us to great heights and loves the program. That is why I support bringing Bruce back.

As for why tomorrow? This is becoming a grass roots movement. First it started off with unpleasant fans on twitter. Then it moved to the petition, the Clay Travis article and YouTube video. Now it has begun to pick up national attention in the Gregg Doyle article. It is time to put on more steam.

Do you think former coach Pearl would approve of your methods and timing, as he was treated similarly?

This is the kind of thing people do or say when they THINK they're mature, such that everyone else finds out otherwise.

I think the kid is very Mature. He is concerned about the future of the program. I would replace the "bring back Bruce" chant with "anyone but Cuonzo" though
