After skimming through the updates on the recent tragedies that are continuing to take place, I was surprised to see that no one had began to discuss this here.

I'm not certain there is much of a connection to the majority of posters, but I for one have family members living on a few of the islands. Some in the Air Force, others just civilians. All is well for them at this point which is a relief.

Given the current state of our Economy and from what I can tell, Obama's swift action to send help, how do you perceive this effecting us directly here on the mainland?

i would say certain imports may be delayed. i'm sure oil will go up again and gore will call on america to pass more global warming laws. I'm sure he'll blame this on global warming.

minimal economic effect here. japan is in deep trouble economically though. their debt is already astronomical

This. I actually heard that oil may drop a bit due to a temporary drop in demand from the world's 3 rd largest economy. Maybe not though. I will defer to the more market qualified.

oil's down $2.50. i certainly don't see an increase in the oil price from this.

My biggest concern ATM is the lack of cooling flow to their nuclear reactors.

I believe I read this am that they had shut them down, with only one giving any type of alarm. Reportedly no damage, just precaution.

Are you insinuating we could have a similar experience to Chernobyl? Fall out, ect?

They've exacuated the areas around them due to issues. Granted I've not seen anything in an hour so it may be under control now.

My initial knee-jerk thought concerning gas was that here comes $5, but the idea that it may go down makes a whole lot of sense.

Will be interesting to see how long it takes Japan to recover from this all around.

No. Different system than the Russkies. Modeled more from US technology. Still even with a shutdown, there still needs to be a cooling flow while the shutdown process is initiated. That stuff can still melt during shutdown as I understand. I am no nuclear physicist, but I did stay at a Holid.... never mind.

I knew their debt was through the roof, but it blew my mind this morning when I heard that their debt to GDP ratio is 200%.

You know more about it than I do apparently Jay. Thanks for the insight.

Welcome.

The images from Japan are sobering to say the least. Think of the power involved... breathtaking. I heard some ships on the west coast are being sent out to sea in the most unsheltered ports, San Diego excluded. All the way across the largest ocean. Wow. 7 ft tsunami in Ka'nnaluie (sp? Obviously) HI with some destruction.

Some of these images remind me of Katrina. Mother Nature's authority over us is dominant.

But man has the power to increase seismic and volcanic activity through increased CO2 emissions.
Until we cut CO2 emissions, you will see a lot more of these types of tragedies.
