Usually when I come in here, it's to keep up with the fresh outrages between the parties or just to gently push a button or three. Today, after I posted a comment concerning people who dislike the way W is portrayed as a schmuck and whether or not they would treat Obama in the same way if he were fortunate enough to win. I think both parties are full of it by the way....

I couldn't help but wonder, What is the point of it all?..... I don't mean to sound gloomy and all but it just seems like a race as to who can take us off the cliff faster.

Whatever Party A does is deemed wrong and surely to lead the country down a path of despair until. Party B manages to come in behind with glorious promises of reforming the mistakes of the previous party and Party B begins taking the onslaught of Party A who also claims that the direction is wrong.

What good is our political system when it is driven by the one thing that only 1% of the people in the country have?

My point of view on this is a little different than some. I don't think it's any worse now than it's been for the last 200+ years. It's just that now you get to see how the sausage is made via 24 hour news channels and the internet. Politics is and has always been politics.

Yeah...I get that. Everyone is just looking out for their supporters and their ideals. I just find it so hypocritical that the opposing parties cut each others throats out just for doing what they would do.

To me, they are all just soulless robots trying to keep their cushy jobs and doing whatever they can to preserve the illusion of public trust and choice as far as what goes on in this country.

I think this a great observation, and would add, that you have a lot of young people entering the arena now, and maybe not in touch with political endgame as a whole.

I agree with GAVol and would add this ray of sunshine:

We've had presidents elected that the other side condemned as pure evil yet the country muddles and meanders through. It's like a pendulum - it swings left and it swings right. The beauty is that when it swings too far one way, those in power get smacked down and we're off in the other direction.

It's always messy and it always has been but when you consider the vast amount of interests that are trying to be reconciled, the system is pretty damn amazing and remarkably effective.

This is true but for all the promises we are stuck with the same ole same ole, very little really changes once you look past the petty differences.

Is it? The country is not yet 250 years old. Sometimes I believe we are a little too giddy with what we have. I am not complaining about living here but wonder if we are fooling ourselves. How hve the tax rates risen over the decades? I figure you'd know something like this.

I have yet to see a better system ever put in place on this earth, while not perfect, we will see a better system come along someday.

The big problem is that when a system works too well the populace becomes arrogant and lazy. And tax rates rise and fall.

I was not arguing that I have seen a better system either. Just that perhaps we are a little premature in propping up the greatness of a system for a country that is relatively still in infant(perhaps more like pre-teen) stage.

They may rise and fall incrementally from year to year. I'd like to know what the trend is. And taxes are just one issue.
