It wasn't officially official but I think the general consensus was that it was pretty much a given it was going to happen.

I wonder if he'll have any involvement with the Defenders series they do. I know he wouldn't be a member but he could still make appearances.

Well I don't know about The Punisher but there is going to be a combined series called The Defenders after Luke Cage and The Iron Fist have their first seasons. I'm sure The Punisher and Elektra will both at least make appearances.
