Palestine was a name the Roman Emperor Hadrian gave
the region to further infuriate the Jews because it was
a reference to their ancient adversaries the Philistines.
Prior to 1967, the West Bank (called Judea and
Samaria by Israelies,) was part of Jordan. Were the
residents of the West Bank considered "Palestinians"
in 1966 or "Jordanians"?
Prior to 1967, Gaza was part of Egypt. Were the
residents of Gaza considered "Palestinians" in 1966
or "Egyptians"?
The Arabs took control in 636. Mamluk moslems
controlled the area of Israel from 1200 to 1517.
Then the Ottomans until 1917. So for nearly 1300 years,
some form of Islam controlled the area. NONE of them
named, or renamed the area "Palestine". It was mostly
called Southern Syria.
Jordan had Judea and Samaria from 1948 to 1967. They
didnt rename it Palestine either. Instead, called it the
West Bank (of Jordan).
The land was NEVER important to the moslems.
A probable Urban Legend about a speech at the
UN sums it all up:
A representative from Israel began- Before beginning
my talk I want to tell you something about Moses.
When he struck the rock and it brought forth water,
he thought, What a good opportunity to have a bath!
He removed his clothes, put them aside on the rock
and entered the water. When he got out and wanted
to dress, his clothes had vanished. A Palestinian had
stolen them.
The Palestinian representative jumped up furiously
and shouted, What are you talking about? The
Palestinians werent there then.
The Israeli representative smiled and said And now
that I have made that clear, I will begin my speech.
Historians will write of the beginning of the 21st
century "and era when the arabs were hamming
it up as usual."
According to "The Arab-Israeli Wars" by Chaim Herzog, all Arabs living in the area in 1948 were told by the
others to vacate as they would invade and kill all the
Jews. Then they would be allowed back in to pick up
all the goodies. Any Arab found there during the invasion
would be considered a Jewish collaborator and executed.
They all bailed, starting the habit of "Never missing an
opportunity - to miss an opportunity." (thank you Abba
Eban)
And from historian Shai ben Tekoa:
"...the Arabs did not start calling this region Palestine
until 1917 when the Brits started calling it Palestine.
In actual fact, by 1919, the leader of the Arabs here,
the Muslim priest Haj Amin al-Husseini, founded a
newspaper whose title expressed the whole purpose of
the founding of the newspaper. He called it Southern
Syria, because he objected violently to the British
conquest of the country and their plan, their mandate
from the League of Nations, to create a jurisdiction
called Palestine. "The Muslims had never administered
such a territory in all their fourteen centuries. In their
minds eye this was all southern Syria

[...] But their claim, if ever it existed, does not exist
any more. The Arabs outside Palestine are organized in
a number of states. ...On the other hand, the Arabic-

are not the descendants of the conquerors. But even if
they were, they would have lost their alleged rights .

... But a Palestinian people which could claim this right,
does not exist. The Arabic-speaking inhabitants of
Palestine are either Arabs, as they call themselves,
or Syrians, as the Syrian Arabs prefer to call them.
There is no other alternative, as Palestine has had no
separate political existence since the destruction of the
Jewish State, but has ever since formed part of Syria.
An independent Arabic Palestine has never existed.
