Speed!!
Under the previous coach, our team speed continued to lessen. Football is a game of inches. A linebacker gets fooled into taking a step to his right and then the play comes back to his left. Even with good recovery, he is able to get an arm on the runner, but in the SEC, players will run through arm tackles. However, with one more step, the linebacker is able to get his shoulder into the runner and make the tackle. Inexperience might cause us at times to completely miss an assignment, but the clear increase in team speed as well as strength is going to surprise many of the "panicked" fans on this site.

'Cept 20-21 year old, developed men with much more "snap-experience" can lay out the fastest, shoulder tackle from an 18 year old boy...

But...you are correct...the added speed means we will have more shots in the future to win...supposedly...

Speed, the one thing that can not be coached. You're either fast or you're not. Tennessee's speed is improving, but still not everywhere yet.

All of the better SEC teams recruit and have speed. Nobody has an exclusive on that. Natural talent and coaching are the keys. You learn who has DI talent by letting them play and develop. The coaching aspect reveals itself in a couple of seasons. A lot of unknowns for UT right now in those last two areas.

The key to this year's defense seems to be what the D-Line can do against tough SEC offensive lines. If those guys can disrupt the QB's a little and limit his time to make a play were gonna see a tough defense. Moseley is getting high praise more that some of the four and five star players. He and Cam could be lockdown corners if the D-Line doesn't give the QB to much time to make a play. Anyone can make a play with enough time. Looks like were gonna play a lot of five back looks so Coleman is almost the third linebacker he will need to make a lot of plays for us.
We seem to have the necessary speed at linebacker and in the secondary the D-LIne is the question mark. They have the speed although their ability to pressure the QB is the big question mark. I think we'll be a lot better against the run for sure.

The offense is certainly potentially one of the top three in the SEC. It all comes down to the QB being able to get the ball to playmakers. I think North, Smith, Malone, and Pearson are as fast as anyone in the league. Our offensive line is either better than advertised or our defensive line sucks. Speed at running back is SEC top five. The huge problem on offense is QB he will determine how the offense plays.

The coaches are teaching how to develop speed. Yes, you can teach a kid how to improve their speed.

The problem is Dooley did a horrible job at recruiting speed, awful. And the fast players that the coach before Dooley recruited all left. Tennessee does not have a roster FULL of fast SEC D1 athletes like the other schools do. We have a Freshmen and some Sophomore group of speed.

Ehhhh....maybe a little. You might improve a guy that runs a 4.7 up to a 4.6. But a 4.7 guy could never run a 4.4. When you go ahead a recruit people like North, Hurd, ect that alread run about a 4.4 then you are really in business.

Because Butch gets it!!!!

But, seriously Butch has done an excellent job so far of feeding the media only what he wants them to know, and therefore the fan base with the goal being to keep expectations in check for the season.

The folks in the media tend to create too much hype and optimism, Ferguson bing a perfect example. He was anointed the savior of UT Football, and he never took snap in a game, all because the media ran with a story that he was the man!

Scheming can make up for a lack of speed in many situations. To further close the distance is game planning and in-game adjustments. These three done well will produce a higher winning percentage than speedy, 3-5 star players on your roster. Scheming, game prep and in-game adjustments.

This is (or at least it should be) why coache$ get paid in one year more than most will make in a lifetime.

Players play faster when they know what they are doing. We seemed lost at times the last two years.

I think the overall lack of speed may have been the biggest issue of the past couple years for this team. It's hard to tackle someone when your 15 yards behind them.

I think a lot of our speed issues can be corrected with more importance to positioning and discipline.
