I'm using "scene" as a blanket term for any kind of non-mainstream rock music. I have pretty much been in to this kind of music all my life, minus Blink-182, my all time favorite band. I'm very curious if any other posters listen to, or have even heard of some of these bands. Here are some of my favorites:

Fear Before The March Of Flames/Fear Before (post-hardcore/experimental)
Dance Gavin Dance (post-hardcore/indie)
Between The Buried And Me (extremely metal, fusion)
Circa Survive (indie/neo-psychedelic)
Misery Signals ("melodic metal")
Norma Jean (hardcore)
The Chariot (hardcore)
Protest The Hero (post-metal)
Pierce The Veil (post-power pop/indie)
The Receiving End Of Sirens (indie/experimental)

The notion of non-mainstream rock is amazingly broad - seems you have a specific version of non-mainstream rock in mind.

Well, yes, but I didn't want to limit the thread to my specific tastes within the macro-genre. That way, it's more accessible to a wider audience.

I used to like Underoath, not so much anymore. They're still a great band though. I've seen them live many times and have met them. Very awesome shows, and genuinely nice people.

I like all of your bands alright.

Circa Survive is one of my absolute favorite bands. I especially like Juturna. Very creative and indulgent.

Their shows are so freaking awesome. I've probably seen them 10 times, and they ALWAYS play a great set. I met them one time in Charlotte. They were all very nice and Colin, their awesome guitarist, actually live in Knoxville when he was young. He was really fond of the zoo.

Anthony Green was very nice and happy to conversate. My friend in Nashville is a huge fan of his, and Anthony was nice enough to talk to my friend in Nashville over my cell phone. One of the coolest experiences ever.

Emery is one of my favorites, saw them a few times in Columbus and they sound just as good live. I really enjoyed Alexisonfire Crisis album.

He is Legend is another band I should have mentioned, definitely one of my favorites. Good old fashioned southern rock/metal.

The Replacements transcended "scene music" into what it is today. Any good hipster will agree. Way underrated band. Love Replacements

Basically a broad term to cover a genre that mixes melodic singing and screaming voices with music that is a mix between hardcore/metal and pop. There's a lot of variety, its kinda just an umbrella term.

Exactly. Glad someone here on VN gets that concept. It's not a very good label, but I don't know how else to describe it.

No doubt. The recent Westerberg/Grandpaboy stuff is excellent and worth checking out. Here's a couple classic 'mats

I didn't like the change in style and voice at first, but Suck out The Poison ended up being one of my favorites.

Who ever. Mentioned Brand New and Finch is right on, two fantastic bands. Taking Back Sunday was a little poppy but I loved their first two CDs in high school.

Yeah I started listening to TBS and Thursday back when I was a freshman in HS.

Listened to a lot of Saves The Day too.

I guess that when I hear the word "hardcore", I assume that people are talking about the speed punk bands like the Misfits, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, etc. I figured that post-hardcore tied into that somehow.

The categorization of music seems to be shifting sands. For example, at one time X was considered a punk band and now they're Americana.

Yeah its very hard to accurately label most non mainstream music. I think of metal/hardcore in this sense as like As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean ect. Bands that almost exclusively use heavy, fast music and vicious screaming(though some could make the argument they are Metalcore lol i know right?)

Posthardcore takes different elements like the speed and tone of hardcore but blend in singing and more melodic guitar lines.

I bet if you look at any of the bands Facebook it will say something different though.
