Richard Sherman smartest QBs: Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Andrew Luck | The MMQB with Peter King
Interesting take on "smartest QBs in NFL" by Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman. I'm sure you are all shocked that VFL Peyton is top of the list but his take on why is enlightening:
What makes him special: When we played Peyton in the preseason, I found a new appreciation for the way he makes adjustments at the line of scrimmage; he controls the protections, and if he sees the blitz coming he slides it. The thing that sets him apart is that hell change it to a run play if you dont have enough players in the box, and theyll get five or six yards because youre not ready for it. Nobody else has both the authority to do that within their offense and the understanding to know when its appropriate.
His arm, however, is another story. His passes will be accurate and on time, but he throws ducks.
2. Drew Brees
3. Aaron Rodgers
4. Russel Wilson
5. Andrew Luck - also listed as having the best arm
Brady isn't even on the top 5 list, tho he gets an honorable mention of 6th and is listed as hardest to intercept.
Even though Peyton's arm strength is not what it was when he was younger, he still dominates because of his ability to read (COMMAND) the line and the pocket poise he has from that. Where this matters, besides my love affair with all things Peyton, is as we are developing our own QB talent with 4 (yes, FOUR) potential starters - what is the most important aspect to look for?
Arm strength
Accuracy
Real time reads
Pocket poise
Evasiveness - ability to avoid the sack
Running game - enough to keep them honest.
How do you guys rank these in importance for what we need and which candidate is strongest in the most critical? They all have some elements better than others but which will be the most important to winning over the next few seasons with the offensive schemes CBJ is likely to run.
