Seeing as the man who brought this sport into the popularity and place it is now, Bill France Jr., has passed away I think it's a pretty good time to analyze the state of the sport and the future for NASCAR racing. I don't know much about Brian France, but I do know he is trying his best to get the sport into the Seattle, Denver, and New York areas, all of which have met significant opposition from people in those areas. I don't forsee the sport having a facility in any of those cities for quite some time, so it appears the tracks we currently have are most likely the ones we are going to be at for a while. However, I do think there needs to be some adjusting to the schedule. The Chase tracks need to be tweaked some, I think Bristol deserves a spot in the Chase, while Loudon does not, etc.

I think it's inevitable that Honda will be entering into the sport before too much longer, as they have to compete with Toyota in everything they do.

With the mandate on the number of teams an owner can have, some big names will be switching teams in the years to come, and a lot of well-known drivers will probably be retiring within the next 5-7 years.

With all that, the sports' popularity remains high, although down from what it has been in years. It's still the second-most watched sport in America, and shows no real signs of being taken over by any other sport.

What are your thoughts, and other issues you see?

hmm...interesting question and a good post.

i definately agree that the days of guys racing into their late 40s/early50s are few and far between. the drivers are making so much money these days at such young ages there's no need to race into old age to ensure financial security. plus, and i think we're seeing now, especially in the Busch Series, a lot of drivers are begining to start their own teams. which in turns positions them become full time owners sooner than later. and if they don't have Busch and Truck teams, they have other intrests in the racing world. the best example of this is Tony Stewart who owns USAC teams in addition to race tracks and being a promoter.

i think NASCAR needs to seriously look into being more consistent in their issuing of penalties. the fact that people (common fans and media a like) are constantly bringing up favoritism issues should raise a red flag. it shouldn't be a case by case basis but a more uniform penalty system. the first violation is X amount of points and X amount of dollars. the second violation is an increase in money and points and so on and so forth, eventually resulting in being kicked out of the sport for so long. i think it should be on a 2 year basis that is rotating, but that's just me. i don't think the slate should be wiped clean from year to year.

i think limiting the number of drivers a car owner can have is a good thing. it prevents the big owners from monopolizing the sport to the point where one and two car teams can't even think of competing.

as for adjustments to the Chase, i don't think the Bristol fall race will change. look at when the race is; the last weekend before college football. also, look at the location. it's a couple of hours between Va Tech and UT. that's not to say NASCAR can't compete with college football but i for one am much appreciative of the fact i don't have to choose between Bristol or the Vols one Saturday in the fall. the way it is now, Bristol is my last race before i put all of my time and money into football season.

Like doozer, after the Bristol night race I turn my attention to football. I still dvr all of the remaining races, but since I usually find out who won before I have a chance to watch it I either delete or just watch the last 50 laps or so.

I would like to see Nascar shorten most of the events (making exceptions for Daytona and the 600 of course). Most of the Sunday race broadcasts start at noon CT, and don't end till after 5. The only part of the race that's really exciting anyway is the first 50 laps and the last 50. Most of the Indy Car events are over in about two hours, which would improve the quality of Nascar dramatically IMO.

Agreed, I also think they run too many races at night, and taking Rockingham's race and sending it to the Left Coast was garbage.

Good points being brought up. Agreed that some of the races definitely need to be shortened. Pocono needs to be shortened (not to mention they need only 1 race) by 100 miles, those races get sooo boring.

Rockingham never had a chance. NASCAR never gave that track a chance to succeed with the dates they had. Racing in early February and November in North Carolina just won't work, and it didn't. If they would have given Rockingham one race and put it in the Spring or late summer, that track would sell out every time because the racing there was so good.

Another reason Nascar is a joke. Why do you start a Pocono race at nearly 5:00 when it's quite obvious that the race is going to be going until night.I know that they don't want another rainout, but this is stupid. They don't call this the Pocono 500 because they run 400 miles. On the bright side, Nascar probably wont throw any of those stupid debris cautions becasue of them running short on time.

Thank god someone on here is in the same boat as me. Nascar is starting to be the laughing stock of sports. If i will ever think any sports are fixed, Nascar is at the very top.

Lets call the season halfway, like we have called 90% of the races and just give Gordo the trophy now. It will save real race fans some heartache.

I'm right with you on this, Nascar is determined for Gordon or another Hendrick car to win this championship. I've never made these accusations before or believed them, but if you just stop and look at all that's went on this year, it seems pretty obvious that Nascar is doing it all for Gordon.

But why???

I mean JR would seem the most likely candidate and he gets pooed on more than any other driver.

What is it about Gordo that Nascar loves????

I don't know, maybe Nascar is trying to get rid of all of there southern fans. I mean, I know they hate the south since they want to just move to California and the midwest to race, but come on. Maybe all of us Junior fans should boycot the rest of the season so Nascar can lose the majority of its fan base.

Sounds good but that wont happen. PLus they will be fine without us. They will just go to Mexico or Japan.
