Everyone knows about the tough schedule. I was wondering about Auburn's schedule as I haven't seen them play at all this year. I was looking for a common opponent to compare, there isn't one.

This led me to check the SEC Only Stats at the SEC digital network. I'm not sure people realize, I didn't, just what we've been facing.

Our Offense has faced Alabama who is 1st in terms of SEC total defense. Florida is currently #2. South Carolina is #3. Missouri is #4. Georgia is #5.

Our defense is #8 and Auburn is 10th.

Auburn's Offense has faced Miss. St. who is #6, LSU is #7, Ole Miss #9, A&M #13, and Arky who is 11th.

Statistically AUB vs TN looks like this:

Offense

Rushing Rank: AUB #2, UT #12

Passing: AUB #10, UT #11

Total OFF: AUB #5, UT #12

Scoring OFF: AUB #7, UT #12

Bama, Missouri, and SC are 2,3,4 in total offense, A&M is #1.

Defense

Rush D: AUB #7, UT #13

Pass D: AUB #11, UT #3

Total D: AUB #10, UT #8

Scoring D: AUB #6, UT #9

Based on the stats, it seems like we ought to really try to challenge them through the air. Let young Dobbs sling it around the yard some to open up the run game. We need a fast start!

Auburn obviously has a fantastic ground attack, we need to find a way to force them to throw. Not sure how to get this done but I think being overly aggressive on offense is key. Playing conservatively, trying to win the time of possession, for instance, is futile against Malzahn. We can't have turn overs, obviously and we need to play a rather clean game in terms of penalties.

I feel much more optimistic after checking the stats, Auburn is a good team, but I think it's fair to say that we've already seen the toughest teams on our schedule. If the boys come out mad, as they ought to do, and the crowd brings it, we got a fighter's chance.

After watching Auburn win down at TAMU earlier this season I more or less wrote off our chances of a victory. That being said... any given Saturday.

To me, this game boils down to CBJ and staff's ability to get these guys motivated to play after 2 beatdowns. They will have to earn their paychecks this week.

Oh yeah, nice write-up OP.

I agree about the guys being motivated, totally. As an aside, A&M's Defense (total) ranks above only UK, their passing D is dead last and their rush D is ranked at #11.

Great piece! If our young receivers can HOLD onto the ball, Dobbs will have a 300 yard game! Defense can play like UGA/SC games, we may be in this game in the 4th...Maybe! Gotta start off with a great first series, not good, A Great series

Auburn's strengths are our weaknesses so it may be a long day. I hope the board doesn't go into meltdown blaming CBJ. He did take over the same D that was crowned the worst in UT history last year.

Well this is encouraging. We need a balance attack and ball control. Abandoning the run will lead to another rout. If we do throw and abandon the run then move the pocket and drop it off to a back. Keep the chains moving.

Defensively stay in lanes and communicate.

Good post OP, Thx. Hopefully AJ will have a field day against AU run offense. That is AJ's strength I believe, stopping the run. If the front 4 come to play Sat, we have more than a fighting chance against AU.

We have to run the ball and run some clock. Our defense can't be out there for 35+ minutes if we want to win. At least their pass game is not as strong as MIzzou.

This game scares me. Auburn's wide open running O vs our D, just looks like a bad recipe. Sorry to be such a doubter. But our D is really starting to look like last years after the last two curb stomps.

I'm hanging my hat on the "at home" intensity from UGA/USC and the phrase "any given Saturday". That aint' much, but it's all I got.

Glad Butch & Co are making the million$ to come up with a good plan instead of me.

I took the time to check out Auburn vs. LSU, Auburn vs. TAMU and the Auburn high lights of their last game vs. Arky.

Some thoughts vs. LSU: Chavis basically said, "Mason ain't gone beat us." It was a very conservative game plan that I'm not sure we have the front seven to accomplish. He played a two deep safety look and kept at least six guys in the box. Still Mason got 132 yards on 26 carries and two TD's, however Marshall was held to 46 yards on 14 carries.

Auburn ran a lot of quick/bubble screens and several QB draw plays, but Marshall is not Johnny Manziel, he's not Cam Newton. He's okay at rock and throw quick passes and if he has time, he's got a decent long ball. He's not a good roll out passer and he's not as effective on three step drop passes if there's some pressure that makes him move his feet. He's not very accurate when it comes to making intermediate throws and he doesn't make decisions particularly quickly. In addition, Marshall fumbled in this game and I noticed he carries the ball away from his body.

Jeremy Hill had 191 yards, 3 TD's and Mettenberger was efficient going 14/22 for 229, a TD and an INT...the INT was a poorly thrown ball on the first play of the second half.

We aren't LSU on either side of the ball, but we've seen better offensive lines and certainly better defensive fronts. More so, the defensive backs aren't that great with the exception of #19 Ryan White.

vs. TAMU: Again Marshall fumbled twice, losing one. Auburn huddles and quickly breaks to formation on occasion. They unveil a nice reverse, a well designed TE wheel route that they had to run twice because Marshall didn't see it the first time. Again White for Auburn made some nice plays, but A&M's defense looked a lot like our D last year, poor tackling in space, wide open receivers etc...Auburn put up some gaudy rushing stats, but A&M put up some equally gaudy passing stats to the tune of 452 yards and 4 TD passes.

vs. Arky: Marshall was efficient, he threw 8 passes, completing 7 for 118 and a score. Look's pretty good right? 88 yards came on one play.

Mason carried the ball 32 times for 168 yards and 4 TD's. his longest run from scrimmage was 20 yards.

Stop Mason. Stop Auburn...Sammie Coates is a good WR.

Have faith fellow Vols..there is a reason Vegas thinks only 7 points separate these 2 teams.Auburn is a top 10 team and we are who we are..They are giving us some respect in this game I guess cause it is @ Neyland but the line still seems strange to me..

Well it is a bad matchup I think but that line tells me Vegas is looking for the Vols to possibly break out this game

I believe the opposite. The Auburn O-line is blocking for Mason on zone read plays. We need to shut down Mason and then punish Marshall when he pulls the ball.

They have a segment on sports talk each week in Nashville where they bring on one of the vegas sports book prognosticators. I forget the name right off. At any rate, he said yesterday that his power ratings chart had this game at more like Auburn -3 or -3 1/2.

Thanks for all the work and write up. This is why I come to VN for the occasional good post like this. We all have to scroll through all of the immature garbage, comedic pretenders, cat fights and name calling to find a few nuggets.

That was the shortest "long" post I have ever read.

Good to see we have a bad rush D, and they have a good rush offense...
