1. UMass is a tough team. They have a shot to be a tourney team this year. This is a good win, especially after the rough early season start. They also finished the game. They cut down the dumb fouls and turnovers late. The first good win of the season is sweet.

2. The defense was astounding tonight. They gave up a couple easy 3's. Everything else was fantastic. A little shaky on the boards to start the second half. That's it. There was one ten minute stretch where UMass had ZERO field goals during that span. They also protected the paint much better.

3. The Bernard King Player of the Game: Jarnell Stokes. His best game as a Vol. He dominated the paint on both ends. His offensive repertoire was at its peak. He controlled the boards and handled the double teams much better tonight.

4. Also, on Stokes. His rebounding instincts are top notch and some of the best I've seen. His ability to sieve through the defense and grab a board, locating the ball perfectly, and then positioning himself to the correct spot on the floor is as good as anyone in college basketball. He needs to be aggressive on the boards to go with those instincts and he did that tonight.

5. Josh Richardson and Jordan McRae gave you 23 points, 12 boards, five assists, and three stocks. That right there is why UT put them away. Those two were good tonight, to go along with very nice defense.

6. Two negatives. Free Throw shooting. Have to be better than 60.6%. Too much inconsistency. Turnovers. More TO's than assists, sixteen total. Tennessee has to do a better job protecting the ball, but they did do that in the second half.

7. The offense attacked the basket. Basketball is simple. If you attack the basket, good things will happen on offense. You will have success. They got 33 free throws and enforced their will on UMass. They were able to kick and drive and got some easy outside looks. That's the key on offense for UT.

8. Much better job not fouling on defense. I was really getting concerned, but they moved their feet better tonight.

9. I was concerned how they would play after the Okie State debacle, but they responded well. You like that with such a young team. This was a nice gut check for the young team and they did well.

10. Oklahoma State was a disaster. It was a sucky loss. But it's okay. This is a young team. They will get better. They get to relax this week and look to improve on the fundamentals. Not a game till next Monday. I'm not going to call this tournament a complete success by any means. But I think you can take away a good amount of positives from this and build on them. There are some things to improve on, but overall you got good run against quality opponents, and went 2-1 with a bang to finish the week.

Go Vols!!! :hi:

Stokes was a beast! I love the gameplan of feeding him the ball almost every time down

Good rebound game. Refreshing, given what we've witnessed lately from the football program.

i may be wrong but it seemed like we played our best with a line up of golden, richardson, mcrae, cheeves, and stokes.......

also, richardson looks a lot more explosive this year........and is mcrae a little taller?

I thought Q definitely outplayed Hall at the 4 today...is he undersized, yes, but I like what he brings.

Fun game to watch today. Chaz Williams does some crazy things with the ball. Even though I root for UT, I'm an alum of UMass and it's good to see them with a solid, relevant team.

Stokes was the best player on the court. He imposed his will, especially in the second half.

Much better offense in general today. Players were moving, driving to the rim, getting found on cuts to the basket. I think we have some good passers on this team, so there's no excuse not to be cutting and moving to get themselves and others open.

I think they can still do more to find Stokes space - like one of the ESPNU announcers said, put McBee on Stokes' side of the court and clear everybody else out. It makes it very difficult to double without allowing a very good shooter open looks from deep, and Stokes is going to kill almost anybody trying to defend him with no help. Having said that, this was a night-and-day effort from the OKST game and a very encouraging sign for the rest of the season. Looking forward to seeing how they play when Maymon comes back.

sorry, that formatting makes my eyes cross.
Can one of you puter geeks put the stats on the post game thread after each game?

If we get today's kind of play from McRae and Richardson on a consistent basis we will win a lot of games. I think our best five are McRae, Richardson, Golden, Stokes, and Maymon. Hall and McBee first off the bench.

Once again Trae with the 6 assist to ONE turnover is impressive. Especially having a small fast scrappy guard on you like he did. It's early but Trae has impressed me the most on this team besides Richardson.

On defense their instincts to step in and take a charge is something you don't see on just every team. That's something you take from practice and have to have the mindset to go out and do. Defense and inside scoring is our strong suit. Continue to improve and we will be fine without Maymon until SEC play. Good game Vols.

Stokes looked unstoppable, Richardson had some fire in him, his offensive game is night and day different from last year. McBee's shot looks a whole lot better.

Actually, I thought the high point of this game was when they said Maymon would be back by the end of this month.

Huh? I must've missed that. I thought they mentioned end of December...he's barely walking and they're saying he'll return in 2 weeks?

I would assume that means back to practicing.

I heard them say December, must've missed it if they mentioned November. From everything I've heard it's unlikely we'll see him on the court anytime before Christmas.

Obviously the sooner the better though.
