Given the importance of this hire, and the absolute s**t-storm it became in the national media, someone(s) career has ended. Who we hired isn't as important as how we hired him. Yes, we needed a homerun.....but maybe we can stretch a single into a double. The rumors of being close on Gruden, coupled with the look of desperation when Strong declined is gonna have heads rolling. I know the fanbase is crazy, but we don't deserve another "it could be worse" scenario. I would expect nuclear winter throughout the UT administration and some loyal heavy hitters to replace them.

If you genuinely think that the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees is going to fire the Chancellor because the Athletics Director hired a football coach that some of the fans find somewhat underwhelming...

well...

you're wrong.

If you don't think that putting higher academic standards on our students affects our ability to compete then you are wrong sir. We are a state school that plays big time football for millions of dollars every year. We are not an academic school. Not to belittle academics at all, but Harvard we are not.

I don't know if you're aware of this, but the University does not exist for the purpose of fielding a football team. It exists to provide an education to the citizens of the State of Tennessee. That so many on this board have apparently chosen to forego that opportunity is as sad as it is obvious.

Cheek can and has affected the athletic program from top to bottom through his influence on the university and academics. Schools that are committed to the highest academics are not committed to athletics and vice versa. UT will have to decide on one or the other and Cheek will be right in the middle of that and thus in danger of losing his job or conforming to something he doesnt believe in. Unless he truly powerful enough to reduce this university's commitment to excellence in athletics. We shall see sooner than later.

I dont want to get into a debate over the importance of education but what you just said is my point. What is important to this school? Elite academics and elite athletics dont usually coexist. Something will give in one side or the other. I know the football program would not exist w/o the school. But you have to know that the school would not exist, in its current capacity, w/o the football program. Im sure that many non-athlete students have gotten a great education with resources provided by the athletic dept.

Try telling that to Notre Dame, Stanford, Duke, UNC, Michigan, Florida, UCLA, Cal, Wisconsin, Penn State, Texas, Ohio State, or UConn.

Jesus tapdancing Christ. If you think that the football program is what's making the University of Tennessee survive and prosper... I'm just.. I don't even... I give up.

...it is a land grant public school, it is for residents of Tennessee to go and have a good education, not attract top scholars from around the nation. If that's what you want, there's the school just for you down the road, Vanderbilt.

You selfrighteous arrogant mother-fu**er. Thats exactly the kind of s**t that comes from ignorant people like you who think that your ideals and virtues are far superior to anyone else. You cant even concede that athletics provides any benefit to this university at all.
Well Im through trying to cuddle you, and others like yoy, and take the high road so that I'm not accused of being a redneck idiot who doesn't value education.
You show me one major prosperous organization that provides education without athletics and I will show you 100 more athletic organizations that aren't tied to academics.
