There's hope for France after all

Seeing France's history with 'conservatives' is it really a good thing he's ahead? And if runoffs in France are anything like the US, this is still a tossup with whoever can get their people to the polls. Runoffs usually favor the challenger or party with the more inspired voters....tip to the Socialists on that one.

admittedly, it is still France, but from what I can tell, Sarkozy isn't cut from the same "right of center" cloth as Le Pen and Chirac.

This is the biggest election for democracy in Western Europe in a long time. If Sarkozy is able to win, it may begin to change the tide in Europe and put some of these liberal policies towards Islamic terror on the scrap head. If he fails, this only spells doom for the rest of Europe. Great Britain is not too far behind France and Germany. Canada and the US would soon follow.

I seriously doubt there will be much difference from Chirac if anything. France is too volatile to make sweeping changes.

Even a small change in tone would be helpful. Chirac seemed to delight in sticking it to the man (U.S.).

It's all up to the independents. The Center candidate I believe endorsed the Socialist. So we'll see if his voters actually follow his lead.

I'm glad to see that Sarkozy won despite the fear mongering perpetrated by the Socialist candidate.

If he has any backbone, if the Muslim youths do begin rioting again (for no apparent reason, just like last time) a Sarkozy administration will not sit idly by and let Paris burn.

that remains to be seen, after all, it's still France. Perhaps the spirit of dhimmitude has died with the Chirac administration.

It's not over. He has to win the June elections. His party has to gain a majority in their parliament to make him worth anything. He could be a lone voice with no teeth if he cannot get a majority or a decent coalition.

I wonder if NPR wil be gushing over this story in the same manner that they have fawned over the female socialist party candidate for the past couple of months?
