I'm taking my wife to Knoxville for the first time this week. I'm trying to talk her into moving there, but I haven't been to Knoxville in 20 years so I don't remember a lot about the area. I'm staying at an airbnb in south Knoxville. We'll probably spend a day in Gatlinburg... I think my son will enjoy that. What else would you guys recommend?

Market Square and the general downtown area has improved significantly since you've been here. Plenty of restaurants, bars, places to watch live music. Of course there's the mountains. Lots of outdoor activities, which means there's more to do in the summer versus the winter. It's improved a lot.

Really depends on what you all enjoy...

Don't go to Gatlinburg unless you allow ample time for traffic. It's leaf season.

If you just want to get into the mountains, Townsend via Alcoa from west Knoxville would be an option

I'd recommend Townsend over Gatlinburg and eat at the Snoring Bear. Maybe drive up to Elkmont or Cades Cove through Townsend.

Good advice. The Wears Valley area is nice and can be accessed by Townsend as well.

Good advice above regarding Smokies. Don't know how old your son is or if you are going to the game on Sat. but if your son is older than an infant and you aren't going to the UT game, go to one of the high school football games on Friday night. Cheap and great to just watch everyone and remember what Friday nights are like. Farragut vs Bradley Central should be a good game.

If you go to Gatlinburg, plan for everything to take twice as long as you planned and wear really comfy shoes. You wil be probably paying a good bit for parking and walking everywhere. You might check some of the attractions to see what it costs to enter as we paid for an attraction because we wanted to see it and because it was cheaper than the parking fees. Just left the van in their lot with the placard on there.
Also, don't walk along the roads or trails flicking lit matches. It probably won't end well.

If you are trying to convince the wife to move there, you need to do a sort of real estate tour. Show her some of the nicer, somewhat affordable areas (depending on your budget of course). Drive by the schools too and show her the abundant shopping and dining options whether you actually go there on this trip or not.
