Since we have a "down with Memphis" thread I figured we needed to examine the other side of the coin. Let me start by saying that in a general sense I heartily dislike Memphis. I grew up in Williamson County and the crime, pollution, politics, and racial unrest that permeate Memphis society frighten me. That said, there are a few things about Memphis that I do enjoy, such as:

Eating the dry-rubbed ribs at the Rendezvous :toast:
Watching the ducks parade at the Peabody;
The statute of N.B. Forrest in Forrest Park;
Elvis/Graceland; and
Beale Street.

I am sure there are other good things about the river city. Let's hear some.

I grew up in DeSoto County Mississippi, and really hated Memphis growing up. Too darn hot in the summer, and too darn cold in the winter, and there were too many Bama, MSU and Ole Miss fans for my liking. I was regularly persecuted as faithful member of Big Orange Nation each time we lost to Bama in the 80's and early 90's. Plus it's a racist city with a bad attitude.

Now having said all of that, i agree, there are things i miss terribly, especially after experiencing what the folks over here in the Carolinas call BBQ!!

The Rendevouz, yep, love that place.
Interstate BBQ...ummmmmmmmm.
Beale Street has gotten infinitely better since i left
the new Peabody Center and Red Birds stadium...i wish that would have been there when i was growing up there...
Memphis in May...alwasy fun, even in the rain.
Huey's Cheesburgers...AWESOME!
Silky Sullivan's...I don't remember a lot about it, but i'm told i had some very good times in that place!
Outdoor concerts at Mud Island Ampatheater...
And my Grandfather..still lives in DeSoto County, and i don't get back enough...

Go Vols. Beat them Tigirls.

:hi: One thing for sure that you and I will agree upon is the So-called Barbecue in the Carolinas. I believe that is the worst excuse for barbecued meat in the country. I have lived in 7 different states; Tn, SC, AZ, NM, FL, VA and KY, and have traveled to every state in the union except Alaska, as well as 6 different countries. During my life, I have come across nothing in this country or elsewhere that is equal to the unpalatability of the Carolina Barbecue with the single possible exception of Carolina Cole Slaw. :bad:

The Rendezvous in my opinion is the best barbecue in the land and yes I have eaten Kansas City Barbecue.

My son lives in Germantown, MIL lives in E. Memphis, most wonderful memory of living in Memphis for many years was meeting Elvis and x-raying him twice... what a nice man he was and seriously hubba hubba... if it weren't for family living there now, you couldn't pay us to go back...

GO VOLS... GO BIG ORANGE ....

On a lighter note, ex hubs sweet daughter is on the dance team for Un. of Memphis and my son graduated from there, he's a graphic design artist...

My pal John Calipari and the UMemphis dance team. I've known Cal since he was an assistant at Pitt and, despite rumors to the contrary on this board, he's a quality guy.

Things we hate about Williamson County:

Brentwood
Arrogance
Snobbery
Hypocrisy
Old coots pulling rifles on 8-year-old girls trick or treating because they're from Maury County.
Cool Springs (the pasture before it was just fine).
Never-ending chain restaurants.

Things we like about Williamson County:
Franklin
The farmland that's left
A great Alumni Association chapter (It has the only Tennessee natives left in the county.)

You need your taste buds adjusted if you think that dry rubbed garbage you're talking about is BBQ. I've tried it and all I could thnk was "When do you taste any meat in this junk?' Now North Carolina Lexington style pork slow cooked over hickory coals served with vinegar sauce and red coleslaw, that's real BBQ. You can actually taste the pork.

we can agree to disagree...i almost freaked out when i moved here and they didn't serve REAL cole slaw and BAKED BEANS with BBQ. What the hell is Brunswick Stew anyway?

And in SC, they have this mustard based bbq down there...got a bbq sandwhich once, and it was yellow!!! I was like, man i think your stuff went bad or something! LOL...

I don't know where you've had Dry Rub at, but i can assure you, if you had them some place that doesn't specialize, well, your right in your assesment...dry rub is an art, not to be taken lightly. :nono:

Right on with all that.

I went to a small high school in Memphis out of 200 grads +/-, I was one of two that went to UT. Three out of four went to Tiger High. Some had no choice (money) but most didn't want to stray too far from Mommy. :air_kiss:

As to what I liked:

Leaving.

:lolabove:

I raised children out in Cordova when Cordova had zero grocery stores, had to go into Bartlett proper. Grew up in E Memphis, couldn't wait to get out.

Flat, flat, when I went to school in K'Ville, I saw a mountain, couldn't believe it. Actual changing terrain, unreal, surreal.

Before children, my wife and I would get in the car and drive the xprerssway, that was called a "good time".

Then, of course, there is Shelby Farms.

And Mud island.

And watching bball at the Fieldhouse.

Oh, and the beautiful public golf courses like Overton and Audobon.

Then there was the wild and lovely West Memphis.

Or Libertyland.

Look at what you listed. Ducks, a statue, yuck ribs, a drugged singer who lived in TackyHouse Supreme and a fake Beale Street with no blues.

Not picking on you but any wonder why ppl despise that place so much?

Look at your list. :mf_surrender:

A statue of a Klansman, no less. Nothing says tolerance like a tribute to a bloodthirsty racist.

Why don't you just come out and say it: "I'm a racist from Brentwood!"

And while you're looking for things to like about Memhis, why don't you look beyond the tourist brochures they put in motel rooms.

I wouldn't call it bad taste, I would call it different. He wanted to be flashy and it showed. If he had been boring and bland like that John Mayer guy for instance, he wouldn't have made it as far as he did. It was all part of "the show." :biggrin2:

I think that your assumption that I would be a racist probably says more about you than it does about me. Maybe you should expand you circle of acquaintences and broaden your mental horizons a little before you make libelous accusations about other people. :nono:
