We should revisit this thread a few years down the road when we discuss whether or not Coach Jones should be fired because he dropped an 8-4 season and was spotted at a Krispy Kreme.

Man, we were fast! ESPN loved us when we were laying waste to folks left and right. So much talent. Several times you heard how our team speed overwhelmed the Irish. Nostalgia is setting in... I miss those times.

We start winning again and this will happen again but we have to have the talent and speed as well good player development to get back to that level again.

So after this game we were ranked number 2 in the BCS standings, ahead of undefeated Virginia Tech. If we didn't lose to Arkansas, do we play Florida State for the National Championship?

1999 NCAA Division I-A football rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yes. After the Alabama game, there was speculation that there could've been a rematch between us and Florida State in the NCG. Florida lost twice to an Alabama team we manhandled (game was nowhere near as close as the score indicated). Tee was consecutive offensive SEC Player of the Week and was on fire.

We just didn't have the gun at WR. Stallworth hadn't developed into a starter yet and struggled with the playbook as a RS Freshman. Wilson, Parker and David Martin were all inconsistent possession receivers at that point in their careers. Cedrick was good, but he was nowhere near Peerless.

"They haven't seen defensive team speed like the volunteers will bring". When is the last time we could say that?

I remember the aftermath of this game. I remember Fulmer crying on ESPN we should be #1 then some linebacker slamming him in the media sayin "Tennessee ran the score up on a mediocre Notre Dame team". And of course, the egg he laid the next week followed by another blowout loss to Penn State.

Wow! It is hard to remember these days and try to be positive after what we've seen the past few years. We will be back! I understand people's frustration, but I'm sure we are in track.

The good ole days! My nephew got married in Calif. the day we played ND in 1999. A whole contingency from TN was there. The game was during the reception so about every 10 minutes one of us would get up & check the score from a TV in another room & come back & report what was going on. I hated missing the game but that was a fun night!
The Vols will be there again soon!
