It appears to me that when the D back lowered his head for the hit (before the receiver) he was aimed at the guy's chest. The receiver lowered his head at the last second before impact and got jacked up.

Sure, I think the guy was trying to knock him silly, but I am not 100% convinced that he was intentionally aiming for his head.

Edit: I will concede that it looks worse at a faster speed after that ridiculously large GIF loaded.

Mcgahee DROPPED his head. anyone wearing a helmet is taught to lower their Shoulder, not the head.

the hit was aimed at his numbers, which is perfectly legal.

Mcgahee simply got KTFO, and is lucky to not be eating his meals through a straw for the rest of his life.

he launched himself upward, it should have been 15 yards, it was alot worse than the hit on boldin early in the year and he was in the air. i would have to say it could have been either way if he was trying to hurt him or not.

just went for the knockout shot. no intentions of actually wrapping up. his arms are in front of his body. had he tried to actually make a form tackle, his head would have been much lower and leading with his shoulder.

Defender led with his shoulder.

When I opened the thread, I thought we were going to be talking about Hines Ward. Silly me.

It wasn't intentional... I didn't think so (albeit until a few hours after the game). The NFL didn't think so.

What's the rule on the books for intentional helmet to helmet hits? IMO it needs to be a fifteen yard penalty.

Also worth noting is that the people in charge of the Steeler's PA's shouldnt have kept playing fan & "go team" music during the whole aftermath till the carting off...

i agree, pretty classy. that is what upsets me more. but should we expect anything less from the squeelers.

Were what pads?
got me.
I call it a good hit.
finally....

I watched Super Bowl 14 last night on NFL network, and as i watched, i couldn't believe what they were allowed to get away with 30 years ago.

way late hits out of bounds. way late hits after the play. Head shots, horse collars......basically you name it, they did it. there was no such thing as "blow to the head" or "roughing the quarterback"....those guys got their asses kicked on just about every pass play.

and the ref just marked the ball and wound the clock.

Granted, you look at the D linemen and O linemen back then, and today they look like a possession receiver or big tightend, but the equipment they have today vs. back then is soo much better as well.

I understand the rule changes for safety sake etc...

but the game has evolved quite a bit froma physicality standpoint.
