TIME TO PUT ON YOUR TIN FOIL CAP!

Kids in America should be required to learn more than one language, but the language shouldn't be singled out.

yes they should be made to learn another language but I'll disagree on the forced part. We were required to take Latin in 7-8th grade (actually the first class to do it) and it helped immensely once I got into a foreign language in HS. I'm just not sure we even started early enough.

english is the universal language of business in the world. while it's helpful to know another language, i'd hardly call it something required.

although I would say the emphasis should be on learning English first

I've already forgotten more Spanish than I learned those 3 years in high school.

Me, too, but if I'd learned it at an earlier age I think it would have stuck longer. I wish my school had more to offer than Spanish and French. 2500 students and only two languages to learn.

Foreign language classes are also required for most college degrees.

FYP.

Most of us engineers and tech majors don't have to fool with foreign languages in college (math is universal right?). That being said, I am trying to learn some Japanese on my own time, since my company deals with many of their companies on a regular basis.

I'm pretty sure that when I was applying to schools they required at least 2 years of foreign language in high school or you'd have to take it in college. I was applying to engineering schools.

If the DoEd. wants children to learn a language of the future they should all be taking Chinese not Arabic.

Another reason to look at cutting the DoEd.
