I figure that elite D-linemen in high school are used to being praised and celebrated by every voice they hear--coaches, teammates, family, opposing coaches, sports reporters, and scouting services.

It takes an enormous commitment to becoming "your best possible you" to go from that level of praise (and trust in the superiority of your elite physical talents) to subjecting yourself to 4-5 years of Garner's prodding and poking at your every deficiency, every day demanding more of you than you've demanded of yourself.

Gotta figure a big part of Garner's success is the number of guys who weed themselves out before committing to play for him. Applying the Pareto distribution, you're talking about a very small pool of potential players who are the top 20% of the top 20% of the top 20%.
