YouTube - Republican Congresswoman calls Matthew Shepard's brutal murder "a hoax."

I still cant believe she said that. This is way beyond Politics here. I don't care what party she belongs too, this is Despicable.

It hasn't been a secret for the last ten years that one of the main reasons they killed him was because he was gay, and whats even worse is that she said this crap while Matthew's mother was in the same room.

She has the full right to free speech. She can say and believe whatever she wants, but show enough class not to spew this crap in his mothers presence.

Sorry for going off the handle here. I have a cousin and a very close friend who are gay so when I hear crap like that it rubs me the wrong way.

I think she was very insensitive in respect to how she dealt with the subject. I think I know where she was trying to go, I think she may have had some of her facts wrong. It was clear that at some point they knew this kid was gay and he may have been killed for that reason alone, I simply do not know one way or the other, can't make a call there.

What I believe she was trying to do, was trying to point out the non logic in having "hate crime" status reserved for specific groups of people. Crime is crime, murder is murder, there is no need for hate crime bills or status, all crimes are by nature hate, rage or passion crimes when involving murder. I think this is where she was trying to go, but it went horribly wrong. As 63x pointed out, we should really chose more intelligent and better spoken people to represent us.

after things like these how can anyone think our elected officials are in any way smarter than we are or know what's best? Sometimes I think a VN Congress could do much better

While I agree the congress contains at least 20 people diagnosable as "imbeciles," a congress made up of volnation members would represent the end of the world.

I view most posters on here as smarter (on average) than almost any politician. Remember some of us went to school with at least 1 of our reps and know it to be 100% true.

As long as we keep a couple of them away from the nuke codes we would be ok

I would love to see how a mix of average but knowledgeable people could run the country. Put term limits on Congress and more restrictions on campaign contributions and lobbying (stronger conflicts of interest rules when voting), and we would be much closer than what we have now.

Talk about a filibuster-proof congress.

the whole hate crime is a joke. any murder should be treated the same whether your white, black, queer or straight.

the whacko gay activist see using the hate crime laws as a way to stop Christian pastors for preaching that being queer is wrong.

Hate Crimes are very real.

Anytime someone commits a violent crime against a person because of his or her membership in a certain social group, racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation that is a hate crime, not a crime of passion. It has nothing to do with a personal vendetta.

Too bad there are so many dumbasses in Congress. But I guess they wouldn't be there if dumbasses didn't elect them to be there.

if that's the case, then many of the anti-Prop 8 protesters in California could be convicted of a hate crime, especially the ones that terrorized that old lady, the ones that invaded churches and the ones that nearly destroyed a popular business.

however, political correctness will prevent the proper adjudication of these crimes. This is why "hate crimes legislation" is a sham as it will always be politicized.

The part in bold is the only crime, the reason for the crime is irrelevant. Hate crime legislation is stupidity on steroids.

Nope, you would be apart of the ultra pro government party in the senate which would have 49 members.

Then we would have to decide who is in pro government party which would also have 49 members.

Since 615 and I are the only two people on this board who actually love freedom..... we will be the tie breakers!

Right up there with the numbskull Republican Congresswoman who dramatically said that swine flu had appeared twice in humans - and both times under Democratic presidents. She said it was Carter and Obama.

Problem is, the first time it appeared was under Ford! LOLOLOLOL

Not to mention the ridiculous nature of the claim. I guess Reagan gave us HIV?

Yeah, there's always a contingent of far right or left willing to assume that the other side's guy was behind it. Similar to the loons who say that Bush or Israel was behind 9/11.
