I think he's being sarcastic... Let's be honest, Mother's Day is a big scam as far as business is concerned, so is Father's Day, Grandparent's Day, Valentine's Day, I'd even throw in Easter and Christmas with all the crap that's sold on those aforementioned holidays. Thanksgiving is the only holiday that is celebrated by a family or group of friends coming together giving thanks and not obligated to bring a gift or exchange gifts. Here's a perfect example, I reminded my husband that Mother's Day is Sunday and just sighed and got kind of irritated with me b/c I'm certain he feels it's a scam as well and it is. I replied "While yes, I do want some perfume, what would mean more to me is if you helped the children make something for me, or write a letter to me"
I once spent over $40.00 just on cards for all the dads, granddads, step dads, etc... For cards. Cards are a racket too.

it sure seems like i'll i do is get stuff for other people. wouldn't everyone be happier if we all just decided to limit gift giving to xmas and birthdays and also limited it to close friends and family and absolutely no work gifts?

Outside of parents-to-kids I am fairly certain all gift giving nets to zero anyway.

over a lifetime certainly, but as a single man with no kids the gift giving never ends. thankfully i'm getting married in july and i will collect tenfold.

I'm convinced even with that we end up netting to 0.

And don't be afraid to re-gift. You can save a lot of money that way. :)

I told my mom this last night:

"Your mother's day present is feeling happy in the knowledge that you raised me well."

She replied with:

"Well, see, that's the problem. I'd feel better about myself with a single flower."

Not to say that gifts from our children aren't wonderful and when you're child becomes of age and decides to buy you a gift, it is nice, however, don't think we won't worry that money you put towards buying a gift isn't gonna break you financially... motherhood can be a constant guilt trip :)

Food, potlucks etc, I'm not sure that qualifies as a gift... Now wine or liquor, that is probably more of a gift unless you're taking it to family. Food and drink to family isn't a gift for one person, it's more of a contribution for everyone.
