Gas prices shot up last night 32 cents here. Now I wake up this morning to hear that " Oh God the gas stations are closing everywhere, and we will not have gas for weeks because of IKE" This is crap to me, the government will do anything they can to cause us to panic and go out and spend more money. I hate it, makes me want to take a fork and shove it in my eye.:banghead2::realmad::furious3::censored::bad:

the government will?

Who do you think has the most to gain from something like this? That might help you figure out why it has some legs as a news story.

Well the Media blows it up, but still the government controls all.
the government told the refineries to shut down? the gov't ceased operations in the gulf?

I just don't understand where you're coming from, but I can guarantee you that the media loves your exact response and was trying to induce that.

Where im coming from is the fact that gas is soo high, but we can have little gas wars here and drop it to $2.00 and something. If they can do that for one day, then shoot they can for a week even.

I hope your not suggesting that oil companies/gas stations are trying to take advantage of the situation and make more money? Surely you jest.

do what? Gas war confused me and your ignoring the fundamental economics of gas retailer confounds me.

Wholesale gas prices are at something like $5.00 right now...it appears that either inventories were sufficiently high that prices haven't risen near that much at the pump...or the oil/gas companies are holding off raising their prices as long as they can. Gas prices could be at about $5.25 right now pretty easily you would think with wholesale being where it is at.

Wholesale? I don't buy gas at costco.

Then dont worry about it PapaVol okay. Gas is high, it could be low. Just the other day a local gas station here sold gas for $2.80 for 5 hours.

but they're writing off the loss to marketing expense and resellers can only do that in limited bursts.

It's what the company calls customer acquisition cost (or marketing) and they're using it to get something else from the equation. Maybe "loss leader" works for you.

Any way you describe it, it's an untenable position to keep losing money on sales to garner customers, so it has to cease.

Do you assume that Gillette makes money on their razors that they price at $3.

The stickiness of price in this case will make LG's head explode.

It's amazing that fuel retailer pricing is driven by a spread over the average cost of their inventory.

For your information, gas in the U.S. is much lower(even at 5 bucks/gallon) than other first world countries. Try buying gas anywhere in Europe, you will pay much higher. However, if you really want low gas prices, live in Venezuela where it is only 12 cents/gallon. However, living there you will have a difficult time finding such things as milk, eggs, sugar and flour. Oh, not to mention Chavez has an utter disgust for Americans. Maybe you should apply to the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. I heard there are some vacancies.
